Unhappy re; Alcohol intake with Met

Hi I have just read the post from 4.24.03 relating to Alcohol intake and Metformin. I have been px Met with no warning on the box regarding alcohol, i had heard in passing that you shouldn't drink excessively on it, however, i am a bit concerned as some people have mentioned increased damage to kidneys/liver ect.

I don't drink every night but do enjoy a drink most weekends and i don't suffer any side effects realted to Met and drinking therefore i don't usually give this a second thought.

I think i will obviously lessen the amount I drink. does anyone know more about what actually happens when you drink with Met or if I should even drink at all? Does anyone know if by drinking this will make the Met less effective even?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thank you.

Talking Hot question!

This has come up a lot recently on the boards...I went and checked my bottle, and mine doesn't have an alcohol warning on it either. I very seldom drink anyhow, so it wasn't a big deal for me, but you should definitely take note of it. My doctor did ask how much I drink when I started the meds. I don't think a drink now and then would be life-threatening for most people, BUT there is no way to know that until you do it. Alcohol and met can be a rough combo. Depending on what you're eating with it, alcohol is loaded with carbs...can cause unpleasant tummy problems, and messing up your sugar levels. Some cysters say they drink on it and have no problems with it. I do not condemn or condone what anyone else does- I have just made the choice that alcohol interferes with my journey through this disorder, and I have chosen to drink very little on the met. Also, if you're dieting at all, consuming alcohol will stop any weight loss for at least 3 days, until your body eliminates it and gets back to business...I choose not to give up the three days!

The "people" was me. Drinking 1 to 2 drinks on a weekend isn't anything to be concerned about, as long as you sip slowly and spread out the drinks as much as you can. My post last week was a warning to the girls who implied they liked to drink to excess. Anything more than 1 to 2 drinks per week, and there are greater risks of liver problems, lactic acidosis and blood sugar problems. But if you drink a few drinks a week, you have nothing to be concerned about.

As I said, a few drinks per week and you will be fine (although alcohol has completely empty calories and thus is a sabatoge if you are trying to lose weight).

If you choose low sugar, low alcohol drinks and drink them spread out rather than all at once, your body will be less likely to have effects.

Alcohol moves quickly into the blood without being broken down in your stomach (Within five minutes of having a drink, there's enough alcohol in your blood to measure). Thirty to 90 minutes after having a drink, the alcohol in your bloodstream is at its highest level. Your liver does most of the job of breaking down the alcohol once it's in your body. But it takes time. If you weigh 150 pounds, it will take about 2 hours to metabolize a beer or mixed drink. If you drink alcohol faster than your liver can break it down, the excess alcohol moves through your bloodstream to other parts of your body....ie the brain cells, which is why so many people on met get a buzz on more easily. You should also eat with alcohol so that you avoid sugar drops due to the time the liver takes to process the alcohol.

Quote:

During the time it takes for your liver to process the alcohol, the met will be working to lower your blood sugar, but your liver will not send out any glucose to your blood until it is finished processing the alcohol. Alcohol is processed as soon as it hits your system...the liver prioritizes alcohol. So esentially when we on met drink, the met does little or nothing until our bodies are done with the alcohol.

I know it all sounds complicated, but please post if you have further questions.
