I have recently been diagnosed with PCOS and have met with Dr., but not OBGYN. As I read up for my appt with the OBGYN, I am wondering if my really bad dandruff is in any way associated with PCOS? Do any of you have Dandruff that nothing seems to cure?
Hi,
I've read that PCOS can cause dandruff because it encourages oily skin. I've got dandruff but as its not excessive I havent tried any treatments. Hopefully when your hormones are under control it will help it.
Good Luck
I don't have dandruff, but I do have gry itchy winter scalp, so I use the head and sholders for winter scalp when it's cold a nd dry and it helps alot.
I am sure though your doc will be able to help ya out with that!
Good luck

I don't know if you have long hair but my hairstylist told me wearing it in a ponytail can smother your scalp...she advised me to start using "Solve" by Redken...its a little more expensive but it has worked great so far...I was using Pantene dandruff and she said that would put a coating on my hair and scalp and not help the problem...
Also rubbin the shampoo and conditioner (I almost said cream rinse ) into your scalp will help too
HTH,
Amy

Don't get dandruff much anymore but when I get the dry, itchy scalp like pink does, I used tea tree oil, or tea tree shampoo, it really helps, and it gives a cool tingling sensation for your scalp, as well as getting rid of the dandruff. I color my hair so I try not to use Head and Sholders lol, but my friend uses it and it does wonders. Never liked Pantene stuff.
Just wanted to say that I too have really bad dandruff. I thought I got rid of it for a few months when I started using head and shoulders. But it is back. And DNA said that wearing it in a ponytail would smother your scalp and cause it. Well I believe it cause the whole time I didnt have it my hair was to short to wear it in a ponytail. Now that it is long enough to wear it in a pony tail, I have dandruff again. Sucks though.
Dandruff (oily scalp) can be a result of excess testosterone, the same thing that can cause acne and hirsutism. I take spironolactone to help suppress the testosterone and it helps with my dandruff, acne, and hirsutism.

Thank you so much for the information. This is really helpful. I do have very long hair and tend to wear in in a pony tail (and the base of my neck is where the dandruff is the worst!). I 'll try some the products noted and talk with the doc about the meds this week. I will let all of you with the same problem know how it goes. Hopefully I'll be wearing black shirts again soon. Thanks again!!

I don't have dandruff,, but my mom does,, a long time ago someone told me that if you use the antiseptic facial cleaner and put it on your scalp with a cottonball it will help. Mom still does it to this day. By the way WELCOME TO SC!!!

I never associated my dandruff with PCOS. I am glad I saw your post. Mine started about the same time as my PCOS too. Luckily I have just been using Head and SHoulders shampoo and it helped me. I can go a day or two with another shampoo just for something different, but the dandruff starts again so I just stick with the H & S.
Also, I am curious as I am in the Pittsburgh area too. I was wondering if you would like to discuss Dr.'s. If so email me at cur196@aol.com
i have struggled with dandruff all my life and have tried diff shampoos, warm oil massages and doctors but then about a month back i started using selsun blue both aloe and the regular version and my scalp has totally cleared up..initially i thought it was due to Met but then my hubby too had even worse dandruff and flaking problem and finally after so many trials his scalp has completely cleared up..
i had seen the ad on tv and wanted to just give it a shot and its helped a lot.

I had horrible dandruff and actually did talk to a doctor about it ages ago. It seems mine is related to psoriasis, which I have everywhere including my scalp, and he recommended using Nizoral shampoo. I have been doing that since then and it really helps. I don't use it all the time since it is too strong for that and too expensive too. I just use it when the flake start appearing or when my head starts getting itchy or uncomfortable.
Anyway, Nizoral is a little pricey but I have not found anything else that even comes close to working as well as it does! The small bottle is about $9 and the larger one is about $15. But as I said it is very worth it.
