Default Really frustrated and scared.

This is sort of a rant but also about hair, in case you couldn't tell by the title.

Right now I'm just going through a period where I'm extremely afraid of what my hair is doing. I feel like I might be losing it but I just don't know. It seems like every time I wash my hair and comb through it in the shower, I lose at least a handful. I can just tug on it and several strands at a time will just slide out, over and over again. I get worried and start to wonder if my hair feels thinner than it did before.

But then, I don't lose my hair when I don't wash it. It's not like I wake up every morning with shedding all over the pillow and not much comes out when I brush it dry (FWIW I usually keep it straight and only wash it once or twice a week). It's like a normal sort of day to day hairloss that you don't even notice.

So what the heck is going on? My hair has always been massive and thick so I really can't tell if it's that much thinner, but I want to get it NOW before half of it is gone. I'm already on a pretty high dosage of Spiro. Should I be taking flutamide, whatever that is? Is it even PCOS? I'm convinced I have hypothyroid but I can't get any doctor to even test me properly, and now that I'm at school I don't even have time in the day to get an appointment with someone.

I don't know if I'm really expecting any advice...It would be nice to think it's okay to lose a handful of hair in the shower, but I just don't know what to do.

I dont wanna freak you out.. but thats how it started with me. I have.. well had really thick thick hair.. beautiful curls and now I'm losing it like crazy. I wash my hair almost everyday.. which might not be helping but because I use gel I have to. Anyways yea mine started to fall out in the shower and then when I brushed my hair.. and now it just falls out when I pull on it like you said. I'm thining on top pretty bad.. but thank god a headband covers that.. although I have seen a difference in the hair that falls out since I started on metformin, it just wont seem to grow back in as fast as I would like.. and to tell you the truth I dont even know if it is growing back in or just not falling out as much. It's very stressful and I wish you the best of luck with trying to get in under control. =]

Well you said you only wash your hair twice a week..right? This could make it SEEM like you're loosing more because normal shedding can build up over the days. Try washing it everyday and see what happens. Also have you had your hormones checked to see if they are normal?

No, I don't think the shedding is just building up...I do brush my hair everyday and spend a decent amount of time playing with it, putting it up, etc. I'm pretty sure I would notice if there were hairs all over the bathroom floor or something. I'm fairly certain it feels thinner, though.

Right now I'm in the process of getting my thyroid levels checked...either now or in March I'm hoping to get some kind of answer about that, I've been having a lot of symptoms and wonder if that could be it. I feel pretty sick besides the hair. It already seemed to be shedding before Spiro, so I doubt that's it, unless it just made it worse.

if your always brushing it and playing with it then your breaking off some of your hairs so when you wash it the next time you lose them because they're falling out

Navi,

Are you using any heat on your hair? I would definitely do as you plan to do and have your levels check, and also look at the shampoos/conditioners you are using. Winter time is hell on the head so sometimes you have to baby it until Spring breaks.

I use a little bit of heat...I do blow dry it straight but it's a fairly low power dryer and I only do it once a week.

Right now I use castile soap and regular conditioner on it, I'm trying to get away from really chemical things but I still need to soften it.

Thanks for the tips though...I'll just have to be careful and wait and see what happens.
