Hi all!
I just joined your site because I had some issues that led me to getting a diagnosis from my doctor of PCOS. But now I find myself questioning if that is what I really have.
First a little backround about me. I am 31 and have 2 beautiful kids age 7 and 9 who I had no problem conceiving. In fact we were not even trying at the time. I have pretty much always had regular periods up until the last couple years. But my problem was more so that they were coming more frequently, rather than infrequently. Like I would have one, then get another one 2 weeks later, then go 5-6 weeks without, and so on and so forth. I have never gone more than 6 weeks without one.
What finally led me to my doc was I had a period for over 2 weeks. My periods had never been longer than 6 days before that so I was concerened (and grumpy). They ended up doing an ultrasound and discovered I had some cysts on my ovaries. I have also gained a decent amount of weight in the last several years and had a hard time loosing it, so putting that together my doc thought I might have PCOS. She then did blood tests and everything came back normal except my DHEA-S which was elevated. She said this would support my diagnosis of PCOS. She put me on birth control to regulate my irregular periods.
My question is-does having only the DHEA levels elevated and periods too frequently a true indication of PCOS? Or could it be something else? The birth control pill has helped regulate my periods, however I don't want to take them forever because I do not need them for birth control reasons as my hubby had a vasectomy several years ago. I also was recently diagnosed with pelvic organ prolapse and have to decide on treatment for that. The usual treatment is a hysteretomy and of course if I had that done then I would not need the pills to regulate my cycle, but what would happen to my PCOS then?
I have an appt. to see and endo doc, but was just curious if anyone else had a situation similar to mine....I am very anxious to figure out what in the world is going on!
My SIL has cysts on her ovaries but they aren't using that to suggest PCOS at all. I have a dear friend who has more days bleeding than not and a large cyst that might be the culprit but again they aren't saying PCOS to her. Do you have any of the side effects typically found with PCOS besides irregular periods? (acne, central weight gain, excess body hair, male pattern baldness, etc - all indications of excess testosterone).

I have had some weight gain, I wouldn't say just around the middle though. I do not have hair loss issues, I do not have a lot of hair gain issues either. Just in one spot, my abdomen. So I have some of the signs I guess....to me it just doesn't seem to be what I would consider "conclusive". But then again I am not a doctor......
As I side note, just wanted to clarify, I am not getting a hysto to clear the PCOS. I have uterine prolapse, if I get a hysto it would be because of that problem and I was wondering how that would affect my PCOS, as in would it affect it in a negative way? I Know it won't "cure" it.
