I guess this belongs here, since it's a skin issue...
Lately I've been washing my face twice a day, I used to (especially when I had terrible, scarring acne) but then after a while I went down to once daily. So I tried washing my face twice daily and everything seemed fine, until I switched to another facewash (I also use moisturizer, for the record), now the skin on my face - specifically my cheeks and nose - is super dry, like to the point of flaking off.
I went back to just once daily and using a different, less intensive, facewash which made the problem better but my skin is still dry. And I remember reading on wikipedia's PCOS article that there's a dry skin condition that can be a symptom, so I wonder if this is at all PCOS related? Even when I had bad acne, I wasn't this sensitive.
And even if it's not PCOS related, any ideas on how to fix it?

hi
my skin is major dry, too. I read in a beauty book when you have really dry skin to only wash once a day. I face wash off my make up in the night, and in the morning only wash with water. (Sounds awful, but its ok). Then i put on lots and lots of Nivea Creme

I get really dry skin and have the problem constantly. I also get the acne on my body as well. My face gets really dry as well. I use nivea as well to moisturise my face.
Have you tried Cetaphil? I think that's one of the most mild cleansers out there. I have really oily skin, and one of the dermatologists I went to (years ago) recommended it. I didn't think it pulled enough oil off of my face, though.
I can't make a moisturizer recommendation for you, but I really like Clinique Moisture Surge. It's aloe-based, and pink!

My skin is very dry due to pregnancy and has been flaking off as well. I switched over to Purpose soap, which is very mild. I also use 2 moisturizers, Cetaphil (which is excellent and cleared up the flakiness in about 2 days). I use Purpose when I'm going out because it has sunscreen in it while Cetaphil does not.

I can't say enough good things about jojoba oil. It is amazing for almost any skin problem including acne. Try applying it at night before bed. It also works for people losing hair if it's applied on the scalp. Here's a little info:
Women have been using Jojoba oil as a beauty treatment for decades, if not centuries. Native Americans used to extract the oil from jojoba beans as a treatment for cuts, sores and bruises, as well as sunburn. It has been applied to both face and scalp to help prevent evaporation and provide lubrication for dry, flaky skin. It absorbs easily, is non-greasy, and is very pleasant and soothing no matter what your skin type. Many women claim that jojoba oil also has a minimizing effect on pores!
Jojoba oil, like other natural oils, is considered a "natural moisturizing factor". Just like the lipids that are naturally found in your skin, it helps fight surface roughness, flaking, and fine lines. But it isn't reserved just for those who have dry skin. People with acne-prone skin, who suffer more than others from clogged pores and blackhead formation, tend to avoid oil-based products like the plague. They assume that all oil-based products will make their acne worse.
Not so! Due to the unique molecular structure of jojoba oil, not only will it mix readily with the skin's natural oils, but studies have shown that it can even inhibit the growth of certain types of bacteria associated with acne.
Jojoba oil is also soothing for skin conditions like rosacea and sebborheic dermatitis, and will not cause flare-ups. By helping to reinforce the structure of the skin's outer layer (the epidermis), jojoba oil -along with the natural oils produced by the skin- is extremely helpful in the healing process. Natural oils help prevent individual cells from losing moisture, and aid in keeping the skin smooth and supple.
Another oil that benefits the skin and has a low comedogenic (pore-clogging) factor is Almond oil, which also makes for a great massage oil. However, it hasn't been shown to have the antibacterial benefits of Jojoba oil.
Jojoba is an extremely functional ingredient in hair and scalp preparations and many scalp related problems are caused by a hardened build-up of sebum that clogs the hair follicles and may cause some types of scaling.
If this hardened build-up is not removed, it can eventually obstruct the hair follicle's ability to function properly, which can lead to a loss of the hair shaft, and ultimately, death of the follicle.
Jojoba rapidly penetrates down to the scalp and hair shaft, and readily loosens and dissolves this hardened build-up. The scalp and hair follicles are left clean and free to continue their normal function.
It is also an excellent soil-dissolving agent, which can remove sticky build-up on the hair from many modern hair preparations, as well as airborne particulates.
Jojoba will leave the hair clean and supple. Jojoba exhibits a matchless keratoplastic effect that leaves the hair shimmering and brings out the hair's natural color overtones and brilliance, and a periodic treatment with jojoba oil, massaged into the scalp and hair, and then left to do its work, can make a vast difference to the quality of your hair as well as the health of your scalp.
You can purchase Jojoba oil in it's pure form as a cold pressed extract. It's a pleasant, odorless oil that resists going rancid, so it's shelf life is excellent. A little dab is all you need, gently massaged into your skin!
