Post is it really that simple?

I've been off bcp for almost a year now, with one AF 7 months ago. Diagnosed with PCOS recently (with bloodwork panel) and getting into learning about our options.

So, of course I am worried about TTC, which we would like to do ASAP!

Yesterday, my GYN told me "not to worry" and that all I have to do is go on met and i will ovulate no problem. And that because I am thin and healthy I will not have any complications.

From reading your posts, it does not seem like it is this simple! Is she right, that thin cysters just simply go on met and then it's all ok? Or is she just trying to make me not worry?

Any advice would be much appreciated!

Well, for me, it pretty much has been that simple, but as you can see if you visit the thin cysters ttc board, thats not always the case. My advice is to try not to stress, get on the met and see if it works. (good/low carb diets seem to help too) There are other options if it doesn't, but try not to stress out too much right away. It took me about 3-4 months on the met for it to work. I would also recommend looking into an RE. At least you OBGYN knows enough to put you on met, but RE's usually know more about it and will speed up the process if met doesn't work for you. Good luck!

that is so good to hear...though it is easy to stress about all the details. i've suggested that my GYN referr me to a RE, but she discouraged that, saying that I didn't need one because met is the solution. Maybe i should insist...

Thanks so much, and congrats on your pregnancy #3! That's wonderful!

Its hard to give advice on whether you should switch doctors or not. Sometimes going to an RE puts more stress on you and makes you consider other options before they are necessary, yet its hard to predict what you may need. If you aren't in a HUGE rush, I guess my suggestion would be to go ahead and stick with your doctor for 6 months of met and if that doesn't work then go from there. What dosage are you on? When I was first trying to get pregnant I had my period about 4 times that year. It took a low carb diet, more exercise and the met to get me pregnant after 3-4 months. If you look at my signature, you'll see that whatever month I started Met in was the month that my kids are born in the following year. I think thats kind of cool and I think that shows that its the met thats done it for me. I haven't stayed as low carb this time around either. Also, has your husband had a semen analysis? Its a fairly simple and inexpensive test to rule out any other issues that may be going on (I know you figure I'm not ovulating, it's my fault, but plenty of women find out their husbands have some problems too and its good to know upfront) Good luck!

I am a thincyster too, but have been started on Clomid only. No metformin. Funny considering I have a strong maternal history of diabetes, and my mother and her aunt are both on Metformin. My family doctor's plan coincided with the RE I went to see. Everyone is different, but I agree that the RE can sometimes be very aggressive and point you ten steps in one direction when you might be better off just taking small baby steps to get started! Like that whole 'The Secret' concept, whereby if you put less energy in the negative and more in the positive, good things happen! Anyway, I am sticking with my fabulous family doctor who I really trust.

i have not started met yet. i'm finishing my dissertation this summer, and I want to be able to focus on that until then. but my husband and i wanted to have all our options on the table for August when we want to start met or something else. we are planners, so this unknown is hard for us!

in the meantime, i think we'll take your advice and get a semen analysis too, just to rule that possibility out!

i really appreciate the advice/encouragement. i've been pretty doomsday about my chances of getting pregnant, so it is great to get some advice to take some baby steps! those are much more easy to take on.

I've never been TTC, but I was on Met for a couple years and had maybe one period. So if I had been TTC during that time, I assume that I probably wouldn't have gotten pregnant. I'm thin and healthy but Met just didn't make a difference for me. But it's a good thing to start with.

Hi Kate,
I too went off bcp almost a year ago and had two AF's and then nothing. I called my gyn and she recommended an ultrasound and lab work. She diagnosed me with PCOS based on the ultrasound and my LSH/FSH ratio and put me on Metformin. I have been on Metformin for three months now and had no results. I am thin and do not have any of the physical symptoms of PCOS so I went to see a RE. He told me that if the met doesn't work in three months time, it probably won't. So, the next step for me will be Clomid. I would like to conceive but have to O first...so frustrating!
Hope this helps!

It was that simple for me. Unfortunately, I'd already been down all the other roads before I found a doctor who would prescribe Metformin. Two cycles into it and bam I'm pregnant.

I ovulated on Comid and Gonal-f, but didn't conceive. I don't know if the Met had something to do with it, or if the stress of all the monitoring interfered with conception when I was taking those other drugs.

Hope it's that simple for you, too.
