I can't tell you how happy I am to have found this forum with my amazing power of Google-Fu! Last Wednesday I was diagnosed with PCOS and I've had mixed feelings about the whole thing. When I found out, I literally just stared into space for a while and then I cried on and off. Now, I'm fairly happy that finally there was a reason for my symptoms!
I decided something was definitely not right when I started losing more and more of my hair in the bath.. it was getting to the point where I was extremely scared and decided to have blood tests. But a lot of my symptoms besides that are rather common with PCOS from what I have read.
I used to maintain a healthy weight and then suddenly the weight kept packing on.. I'm only 5'4 and now a massive 231 lbs, putting me in the obese category. I was always self concious about this, I knew in my heart that I didn't eat that much for me to put on so much weight. I used to maintain just below 140.. then as I began to put on weight rapidly and develop stretchmarks, I didn't really know what to think.. I tried to ignore it and kept going up size after size.
As for hair growth, when I developed a moustache.. I was a little worried, but figured that I was just a hairy person.. since my arms have always been hairy and so have my legs. I just used hair removal cream on my tash and continued to shave my arms and legs like normal, despite the fact that the hair would reappear at a pretty alarming rate. But these things are pretty embarrassing and I generally kept to myself.. recently I've developed hair on my stomach and bum too.. TMI, I know.
I was constantly tired all the time too, but since I suffer from depression, I figured it was just that.
My periods used to be regular too, then they became irregular and I even went 8 months without one. At this point I was extremely worried and contacted my doctor, who told me they would not investigate it until it had not been present for a year.. which, to this day, I still think is wrong and I probably would have been diagnosed a lot quicker had they looked into this! My periods are still irregular, sometimes they are there and sometimes they're not.. when I do have them though, they are extremely heavy and very painful. Even to the point where I physically throw up because of them, not sure if anyone else has had this problem.
So, anyways.. after diagnosis.. my doctor prescribed me 500mg of Metformin and Dianette tablets (a contraceptive pill which should apparently also help with some of my symptoms)
My doctor told me that losing weight would help me a great deal, which is all well and good in theory.. but I've tried losing weight before and been unsuccessful, seems the more I try; the more weight I put on! She seemed to be not bothered by this and insisted as long as I was trying to do something about it, this was better than just sitting back.
So, what have I done since finding out? Firstly, I searched the internet about it and found a lot of things out and then I found this great place and finally got around to joining it. I also looked at the GI Diet, as I was told it was useful and printed off lists of the various foods that were considered low GI. I also purchased a cross trainer online yesterday and am waiting for that to be delivered so I can start exercising a lot (*sighs and grumbles*) and I started my medication at the weekend.
I have to say, I'm not loving the side effects of the meds right now. I've been feeling extremely sick since starting them.. having what I can only describe as a volcanic bubbling in my stomach, trapped wind and a strange thing of not wanting to eat. I think I've been lucky thus far that I've not actually been sick or experienced diarrhea, despite the fact that I regularly get it.
This was just my way to introduce myself to the forums and thank you all for posting your experiences on here, I have felt much better about things and now know that I am not alone. Look forward to hearing from you all.
Welcome...unfortunately many of us go through the ringer with Drs. It's very frustrating...but you're hear now and on meds and soon things should start to get better.

I wish it were different here but it is very similar. It's hard to find a good Dr, mine is pretty good but I am looking into finding someone better still. It's so important to have someone on board with you for things like this.

Welcome to SoulCysters. I have not yet been diagnosed (have to wait until April for an appointment) but I have alot of your same symptoms. Including the freaking weight gian thing! Good grief. I put on about 35 lbs in a month and a half because I went off my birth control in September. But anyways...have a great day!

Hey Buffy,
I just joined and I just found out that there is a good chance that I have PCOS. I too have been put through it with doctors. I've been trying to get one of them to listen to me for seven years. Today was finally the day that I found one willing to help. I just posted what I've been going through on this site (a few posts above your original post). I think this site will offer me some help has I begin all the crazy tests over the next month.
CaliAmandalyn1981: I hope you get the answers you're looking for. You have to wait until April to be seen though? That's really not fun. I wrote a letter to my doctor and demanded blood tests, even wrote a list of possible things it could be.. I had Hypothyroidism and PCOS as my top ones after doing some research and it ended up being PCOS, seems they don't actually look into these things here unless you push them in the right direction.. I'm surprised I wasn't diagnosed much earlier, considering all my symptoms. Good luck!
TVProducer: I really hope they help you, as I mentioned above to CaliAmandalyn1981, I wrote a letter to my doctor and mentioned all my symptoms and what I thought it could be and demanded a blood test.. Good luck with everything and thanks for posting your experiences.
Hi Buffy, a fellow southerner here! Glad you found the site and got the diagnosis. Your symptoms and story sound similar to mine, although I weigh a fair bit more than you! I've been doing the Rosemary Connely classes since New Year and have lost a bit, just the tip of the iceberg though, and half as much as the other ladies there I think!
I went on the Metformin last year, but it didn't help me lose weight- my reason for being on it, so possibly rather stupidly I came off it. Most people have success with it though.
Anyway, welcome and hope you find this site a help.

Thank you for the warm welcome. It's comforting to know that someone else has been through a similar situation, I am loving this forum.
Congratulations on the weight loss! I know it isn't easy. I'm sorry to hear Met didn't work for you in that regard, I'm really hoping it does for me.. that was one of the reasons I agreed to go on it. I am desperate to shift this weight, regular dieting and exercise seems like I'm just fighting a losing battle. I'm so scared that my weight will just continue to climb. I'm only 21 and I'm carrying around an extra person that I shouldn't be in theory. lol.
I'm already finding this site a huge help, it's great to read that you're not alone in what's happening and the more I read.. the more I can relate and go 'I get that! I didn't know it was PCOS related though!'
