I wish I knew but I think it will be different for all of us depending on our personal symptoms. From what I have gathered so far, it is a case of keeping the insulin levels down. Some of us can do this through diet alone other need more help. I am sure it is harder if you are already the correct weight, however the female endocrine system is complex and it doesn't take much to knock it out of balance.
Hello, just thought I'd let you know a few things that (so far) seem to be working for me. I am normal size and have normal LH:FSH ratio but have cysts on ultrasound (20 per ovary) and eventually stopped having my period after going off BCP. I am currently waiting to see a specialist so I have gone the "natural route". I have started working out a few times per week and started a low GI diet (no simple sugars, no white bread/rice). I drink spearmint tea at night (counters high testosterone) and I take cinnamon (lowers insulin levels). I also began taking prenatal vitamins and femaprin (special form of vitex). Anyways, most importantly I began trying to "de-stress", trying to take baths or sit quietly when my day has been particularly stressful.
Less than two months after starting this regime I ovulated and had my period!! Not sure if my good fortune will continue but I am crossing my fingers. Something else to consider is using natural progesterone cream (NPC) for 14 days to bring on your period...in my case when I stopped it actually triggered ovulation! (weird but true).

Elly in PA - just read your post and noticed that you mentioned NPC made you ovulate. Just thought I'd let you know...the same thing happened to me while using NPC. Last year I didn't have AF for 10 months after stopping BCP. I tried NPC a couple of times to bring on AF which didn't work. Then I decided to try it again a couple of months later, using a different brand and 6 days later I O'd and then had a normal AF 14 days afterwards. I definitely believe it was the NPC that triggered something to correct itself, because since then my cycles have been behaving themselves a bit more. Now I use it regularly from 3dpo as from what I've read it really helps to balance things out. Hope you O again and your regime keeps working for you.

I'm working on the meds part right now (Metformin & Femara), but before that, I was able to get somewhat regular cycles using natural supplements. (By regular, I mean getting a period without Provera in less than 60 days). I used Vitex cd7-28, evening primrose oil cd1-14, & NPC cd 20-28. I still don't think I ever o'ed tho. I was about to add licorice root cd3-7 which I heard can help ovulation, but I never got around to it.

Natural remedies never worked for me, I tried for 18 months. But my problem was opposite. I couldnt stop bleeding. And when I took Progesterone the bleeding only slightly slowed down.... it was when I quit the progesterone that i quit bleeding. Quite weird that we would all have things so out of text book happen....
I am on hormone therapy now. TTC, so they had me on progesterone, and now Im on Clomid to induce ovulation. Its my first round, hopefully I will ovulate.

METFORMIN. I started Met 3 weeks ago and I'm ovulating!!! (I've worked my way up to 1500 mg in a short period of time). This is only my 2nd ovulation in a year. I also used to be an avid runner and my Dr. told me that hinders ovulation so I stopped running and started the elliptical instead.

It's always best to put statements like this into context. There's a big difference between someone who runs (for example) 2 miles a day vs someone who runs 10 miles a day. Both could call themselves 'avid runners', but the impact on the body could still be very different.
While there's no reason to doubt your doctor's advice as it applies to you, I don't know that it would be wise to apply it to everyone.

i have not shared this with anyone before, but here is what can be done to regulate your cycles. you are basically mimicking what clomid does but without the side effects. Normally clomid is taken five days or so after the start of your period for two or so days, but I found that if you substitute natural progesterone (prescription strength) for clomid the effect is the same, and ovulation occurs, even successful pregnancy.
