I recently went to an herb store, specializing in using herbs instead of medications. There, I was able to get ahold of a book that listed some of the foods those of us with PCOS should and should not eat!! One that surprised me was red meat. Aparently red meat is not good for our diet... which is something that I've always loved and eaten frequently. No wonder the Low Carb diet didn't work for me! Also, green foods and fiber are very important for us to have DAILY!!! I'm not very educated on PCOS even though I've been diagnosed for about 6 years, so I'm just now getting interested... If anyone knows any more on what's good and what's not, let me know!
I wouldn't take everything you read at face value. In moderation, red meat is fine and is low carb, low carb dieting does work if you are able to do it and there are very few carbs in red meat. Red meat though should, in my opinion, be limited to once or twice a week due to cholesterol and other heart protection because it tends to be high in fat, high in fat will ruin a diet as well if not considered. The key to low carbing and keeping cholesterol under control is to eat lean to moderate proteins, such as chicken and fish and eat the pork and red meats in more moderation.
The fiber and green part is correct and wonderful. So pretty much stick to the lean and moderate protein, green veggies, and your carb choices should be high fiber ones, like bran, wheat, oats, apples and such. Then you are low carbing as long as you are not overdoing it and the way I keep from overdoing it is follow the IR principle.

red meat is not good due to it hormones; even though the "claim" to have low does.
I have hormone problem now; why would I want to stick that inside of me on top of my already messed up hormones.
If you are interested in such books; Pm me and I will give you some bestsellers and others on the subject.
I eat red meat about 4 times a week. If I had to buy store bought meat, i probably wouldn't eat it because of the hormones. However, we actually raise steers for beef, and I know what they are eatting. It is right out of our corn field.
The Green Veggies is definetly correct. I swear by that one.

oh, cromwell... fresh meat that is organically fed... you lucky girl! yum!
i agree with the others. try to get organic when you can. eat all things in moderation. even people who drink too much carrot juice turn orange. that can't be healthy. but certainly the leafy green & bright colored veggies are very good for us (for everyone, not just pcos'ers) for many reasons. kudos to you for reading and making yourself aware of what foods you should be eating!

I'm mostly a chicken person, but when low carbing we mix it up pretty well. Low carbing helps me out so much. Right now I can't afford to low carb, so I'm stuck. Hopefully we'll be able to get things back on track soon and I'll be able to be on the diet. My point is that while I was low carbing I lowered my liver enzymes & my bad cholesterol. The diet allowed me to get pregnant and carry my baby. I had less hair on my chin and more on my head (at least I didn't shed as much). I was an insulin dependant diabetic and when I was dieting I didn't have to take any meds at all. I felt better. I don't believe that eating red meat did me any harm. I swear, when I low carb I eat more grean veggies than when I'm not. I think this is true for most people, at least most people I know. For me, I don't care what any book says. The are books and studies to support or refute anything. I go with what works for me.

There may be some truth to the red meat thing. I ate red meat all my life then, a few years ago(2000 I think) I was trying to get a PCOS diagnosis. I knew I had the symptoms, but, every Dr. kept telling me I just needed to lose weight. I went online and started reading about all kinds of diets, I read something about the hormones in red meat. I went on a very strict diet, very low carb, no red meat and no pork. Within 2-3 months I was having periods EVERY month. before that I only had a few a year. Unfortunately, I didn't stick with the low carb part, but, I still don't eat red meat or pork. I've been pregnant three times in the last 16 months. All three have ended in miscarriage but that's another story. I did ovulate and get pregnant. Also, there was a reduction in my facial /body hair. So, I wouldn't dismiss the red meat theory. I have no plans to resume the steak or burgers.
