However I have read in the leaflet that comes with my pill that women with a very high BMI require specific attention when they take the pill, due to their already increased risk of high blood pressure, thrombosis etc. The pill multiplies those risk factors.

For me, my weight did affect which pill I was on, but that didn't mean that it didn't work! I have been on different pills for 14 years and my weight has fluctuated from 160 to 260 and back down again. There is concern about the patch not working if your weight is too high, but I have never heard of this problem with pills. Sounds like your doctor is playing games trying to trick/blackmail you into weight loss and I would recommend going elsewhere.
Hey! I am taking BCPs at a 39 bmi.... Pills can cause blood clots, strokes, etc, and the risk is increased with obesity, but honestly, the 2 proven highest risk groups are a) women over 35 and b) women who smoke. If you are under 35 and are not a smoker, and you dont have heart disease, I really think your doctor is just being stubborn, or trying hard to get you to lose weight.. I know we need to lose weight..me more than you, but I have had a lot of trouble due to PCOS>. I would think metformin, bcps, etc would be helpful... as long as you dont take a bcp that is known to cause a lot of weight gain, like the shot.. but youre not wanting that anyway..hrm.
It seems to a British thing. My GP also refused to put me on BCP due to my BMI. (Sorry I cant remember what it was.) It wasn't until I went to the specialist at the hospital who gave me a perscription for it that the GP agreed to continue to perscribe me with it. All I could think of was that they were perhaps concerned for malpractice suits or something.
Not that that is any help to you, but there you go. You weren't alone and being taken off the pill was one of the few things that sent me away from the doctors crying.
(Hope that this comes out properly. I've never posted here before)
