Default Return of side effects after switching manufacturers?

Anyone ever have a return of GI side effects after their pharmacy switched manufacturers? I just got my met refilled and got something a little different...it just came from another lab but it's (obviously) still met, and all of a sudden I am having a slight GI side effect relapse. Anyone have this happen?

This happened to me. I started getting 90 day supplies with our pharmacy (we have to get it there) and it was AWFUL. There was no getting used to the side effects. It was a filler they used.

Since they dropped the prices at so many place, I go to K-mart and just pay cash for mine. Although this brand smells fishy, it does not make me sick.

Patty,
My twin sister and I both have PCOS and my sister had this happen to her. She said the Met that has the awful fishy smell is the good one if you know what i mean.

You know, the funny thing is I was on it about 5 yrs ago and never had one side effect even when I started!! I had no ins at the time and was paying a lot for it (can't remember but I think it was $40-60/month..it was NOT XR, though). Now I see I'm getting the really cheap stuff and I get side effects. When I started it last April I had side effects for about a month and all was good after that. I got it filled at my hospital pharmacy (in between ins plans) and had a 60 day script and I was fine with that (that one was the fishy smelling one...yuck! LOL). Now I went back to my regular pharmacy and there was a label on the bottle saying it was still met but it looks different now (which I assume means different manufacturer). I skipped it last night and this morning (didn't want any incidents at church this morning!), but I'm going to take it tonight and see what happens. I hate to start that process of getting my body used to it again! ugh...

Glad to know I wasn't the only one who thought that other one smelled fishy! Who knew that would be the good one?? LOL

I took met several yrs ago and the side effects were really bad so i stopped taking it. I just started back on it yesterday and so far so good. I am only taking 500mg for the first week. My dr office only uses the name brand. They said the side effects are less with it. So I am not sure what the diff is but it is doing ok so far.

This is interesting. I have a cousin who is also on met and she switched to getting her prescriptions through Wal-Mart for $4 and complained that her met had a bad smell as well, though she described it like a urine smell. She took it back to the pharmacy and they said it wasn't the met, it was the bottle, but she didn't believe them. So how is the bad smelling met better than the other? I'm thinking about switching my prescription to Wal-Mart to save money because I have to pay $10 co pay at Walgreens when I can get it at WM for $4 and I was a little worried when I heard this from my cousin, but thought maybe it's just that particular Wal-Mart's pharmacy or something since I'd be going to a different one in another city.

I am glad I found this thread!!
I thought I was going nuts...
I have been on generic met xr for a year and only had the manufacturer switched early on so i didn't notice the side effects. Well last month they changed manufacturers to TEVA pharm no smell to the tabs and I feel like crap on them. It's as if I am back to where I was a year ago before I was on met. I get shaky, headaches, fogginess, and the GI side effects are terrible. So I finally got to get more refills from my RE and I requested the glucophage xr not the generic. I will pay a lot more for it but it is worth not dealing with the side effects. I will see how it goes.

It dosent really matter what your Dr prescibes the pharmacy will usually give you the generic without asking so check and make the pharmacy actually gave you the name brand if thats what you want. Most Drs dont prescribe generics unless you ask.
I found the namebrand to make me far sicker. The Met from Walmart (with the fishy smell lol) is what works for me with less side effects. I was totally ill on the name brand Glucophage.
I was paying $25 at walgreens for my MET and now I pay $8 at walmart. I have switched all my meds to the walmart pharmacy and now we save $60 a month . Thats with insurance at walgreens too!
Everyones system is different so who knows.
BTW drinking milk with your met will help a lot with the tummy trouble.

My mail order pharmacy does not care if the put only name brand. If a generic is available I haveto get that or pay the full price for name brand. That is why I decided to go to a regular pharmacy. The brand the mail order used (Apotec) was horrible.

Along time ago my pharmacy gave me different color met. It was the same dosage but it was a pinkish/red when my normal one was white. I asked them about it and they said its the same. Last month I switched pharmacies and they gave me the white pills. I wonder if there was any difference. I'll have to sniff my pills tonight to see if they smell fishy. lol
