Default Rice Cooker questions

I think a rice cooker would be a very handy gadget for me and my family!
Do you have a one? Do you like it?
What brand?

I would like a big one that would cook a lot, as we are big eaters!

I want to get one that could cook brown, basmati, wild rice, etc. in addition to white. A vegetable steamer feature would be fun, too, but not essential.

I have been reading reviews at amazon.com and e-pinions. I am tempted to maybe spend the big bucks and go for the bigger sized Japanese made "Zojirushi" brand. They range from $100 to over $200 dollars but I hear they are excellent and have less problems than if I just got a cheap one at Target.

What do you think?
Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thank you!
Kathryn

Hi KKat! We have a Rival 10-cup rice cooker that we got as a gift (wedding present). I am from Hawaii and practically everyone here eats rice on a daily basis. There's a HUGE Asian influence, so rice cookers are a neccesity!

Our Rival is 4 years old now and still works great. I would LOVE LOVE LOVE one of the Zojirushi cookers, but they are WAY out of my price range, and our cheap one does well enough for us. I have tried cooking brown rice and steaming veggies in it and it works great for both, but I haven't tried wild rice in it yet.

I think if you don't mind spending $100-200 on it then you should get the Zojirushi. (The Cadillac of rice cookers! LOL ) But if simple and inexpensive is good enough, then I'd just buy one from Target.

I would go to an asian market and buy the brand supentown. We use ours everday and it came with all sorts of little steamer baskets too. I would never pay more than 60 or buy from an american manufacturer. Mmmmmmmm rice

I don't know about rice cookers, but I know about fruits basket...
You want to be an onigiri? Or just make them?

I have a rice cooker and it is a Rival I had it for years now and it works great. I cook just plain white rice to rice and veggies and rice and beans in it and it always comes out really good. If you use white rice I just buy the bag of cheap white rice and wash it a couple of times and then add the water and let it go, if I want veggies or beans or meat in it, I just toss it all in there. I also add my seasonings in there is well. I think I paid less then $20 for mine and it always works good and my rice comes out fine.

Wow! Thanks for all your responses.

Keep the suggestions coming! I am still looking around. Went to an Asian Store today and they had one of the smaller Zojirushi rice cookers...for about $50 more than I could order over the internet. It was good to see one, though. Sometimes I will pay more just to buy locally, but that was a bit much!

Hahaha! Ah yes! Fruits Basket...remember..."Yeah, Tohru, YOU can be the rice ball!"

Poor little Tohru!

You know, this craving for rice kinda started when we bought the Fruits Basket DVD's this summer. Those rice balls sounded so good!

I like the little rice ball (onigiri) with the arms and legs!

I always get a huge craving for soba whenever I watch anime (which is frequently-- luckily Trader Joe's stocks my needs).

DH tried to make onigiri the other day with the special onigiri rice, but he didn't want to steam the rice in a basket like the instructions said (and we don't have a rice cooker) so it ended up super sticky and difficult to shape. Still tasty though.

That's cool about your DH trying to make onigiri!
I don't think I have ever had the REAL soba noodles....just the cheap Ramen stuff, but guess what! Our town is getting a Trader Joe's soon. In fact, before Christmas, they say! Everyone is very excited!

I am still doing research.
You know, the Rivals get some poor reviews on amazon.com, but I see that at least three of you have them and are perfectly happy with them.
Besides, I have had a Rival crock pot for over a decade and it works great!

But, to be fair, some folks are giving the Zohjirushi rice cooker some less than favorable reviews, too. One woman says that she doesn't like the fact that instead of a buzzer, her Zojirushi cooker plays "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and it wakes up her 2 yr. old son's nap! She has even tried to disconnect it, with no luck. Hee, hee, I think I would enjoy a singing rice cooker, but I see her point! She will just have to make sure to make the rice when the song won't come on during his nap, I guess.

I'll have to ask my sister what kind she has. Her husband is half Japanese and they eat rice with almost every meal. I know she's had hers forever and loves it. I'll get back to you!

Thanks so much for looking into that! I would love to hear which rice cooker they use!
