Ifound out yesterday that I will be having a m/c (9 weeks). my DR said i need a Rogan shot because i am a negative blood type and if the baby's blood was positive the m/c may cause a life threatening infection. I am getting the shot today but it is expensive and I was told my health insurance (HealthNet) will not cover it. i also can't find any info on this drug online. maybe i am spelling it wrong? does anyone have any info on this? thanks so much.

Thank you Thank you! i WAS spellling it wrong! From what i have just read it does not sound like it is a "life threatening" problem for me but it could be for the baby when i have another pregancy. thank you for your kind words. I am sad to be joining this board and now truly understand what everyone here is going through. this has been devastating for us. my heart goes out to all of you.
I am sorry for your loss. And it is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS that your insurance says it won't cover this. It is MEDICALLY NECESSARY for women with a negative blood type to get a rhogam shot. Please have your doc write a letter attesting to this, and if they still won't cover it, file an appeal. That is one of the most ridiculous denials I've heard from an insurance company in a while.
The women on this Loss thread are so kind and wonderful...please lean on us for support any time.
missmeliss, I'm so so sorry you are going through this I'm pretty shocked that your insurance will not cover the rhogam shot. I would call them and raise hell. It's a standard procedure and very necessary. You don't want risk your next baby's life. I am also rh neg and needed two shots when I lost my son (one before birth, one after). They were both covered by my insurance.
I see that you are in the Hudson Valley. I can give you the info about my support group. If you are interested, PM me.

Yes, the nurse at my Dr's office called in the prescription for me and was told by my pharmacy that healthnet generally does not cover this. My DR was dumbfounded when the nurse told her. I plan to call my insurance co directly today to find out what's going on. Also found out Healthnet also doesn't cover more than 3 ultrasounds per pregancy unless you get prior authorization -- i've had 5. who knew? so that will be another appeal. the last thing i want to deal with now is insurance company red tape.
thanks all so much for your responses.
I think that perhaps HealthNet does not cover rhogam shots filled at a pharmacy. Maybe they require that the shot be administered in a doctors office? Argh, red tape is never fun!
I'm so sorry for your loss. Feel free to lean on us anytime.
You need to get the shot. Hopefully, a call to the insurance company can clear this up. As far as the ultrasounds, if your doc writes a letter for you, you should be okay.

Thanks. I picked up the Rhogam at the pharmacy and my DR gave me the shot. Also had a very good talk with her which made me feel better about the whole situation. I actually ended up feeling bad for her because she told me upfront that she always gets very nervous and upset when she has to meet with patients under these circumstances, and it showed. We discussed my options and I think i will wait a week or so with the hope that things happen naturally, and if that does not work, we'll move on to the medication to induce the m/c. She made me feel she was genuinely upset about my m/c and concerned for our emotional well being... its been rare that i've had a DR that has treated me like more that just another patient on an assembly line. it makes a big difference.
Gabriels Mom, I tried to PM you but got a message that your box was full (?) could you PM the info to me on your support group when you have a chance? thanks so much.
I am sorry you lost your baby. I am seeing this a little late but I am glad you got the shot, you definitely need it to prevent becoming sensitized to your baby's blood type. It will help protect future Rh+ pregnancies. In the past, before this shot was available, this was a cause of repeated loss. I know someone who lost, I think it was six pregnancies/seven babies for this reason, before she finally had an Rh- baby that survived.
I am glad you are in such good hands (with the exception of your awful insurance company). It is rare that you find such a kind, caring doctor. Maybe she has been through something similiar or knows someone who has.
