Cool Roll Call

Hello! I was glancing through the boards and found myself wondering who all is here and how adoption has affected their lives (i.e. you've adopted, you're waiting to adopt, you're thinking of adopting, etc.)

My name is Jessica and my husband and I have just begun the process to adopt from Guatemala. We currently live in Naples, Italy. Our home visit is next month and I am scrambling to get all of our paperwork together, but am enjoying every minute of it, knowing that the end result will be my precious little child!!!

Hi Jessica !

I was just thinking the same thing

Congrats on your decision to adopt How exciting !

I am Amy and we adopted our son from Ukraine June 2003, he was 15 months old at the time. Now he is a raging ball of 2.5 year old toddler We are currently researching a daughter, whether she come from Belarus or China or our local Childrens Aid Society I am not sure right now *sigh* still weighing all the pros and cons of each.

Looking forward to seeing where everyone else is

Take care,
Amy

Hi,
I'm Jen. DH and I started the process to adopt our son in August 2002. We traveled to Guatemala in May 2003 to pick up our son. He came home at 9.5 months and is now 2. We are starting to discuss #2, but not sure where we'll adopt from yet.

Hi ladies,

I'm April and am the proud mama to Luke, who's almost 10 months old. He came home to us when he was a mere 4 days old. Sigh...where has the time gone???

Luke's adoption was domestic and we would love to use our agency for #2, but are moving to Germany in November. SweetPea was great and posted links for international adoptions for me (thanks girl! ) so we may go that direction. Right now, I'm being really careless with the bcps so we'll see where that gets us.

My name is Brandy. DH and I started our adoption process in 2001 from Guatemala. We had to put things on hold for a while when we ran into some financial issues. Our agency called us and suggested we switch to Colombia. We agreed without even a second thought. Colombia had been our FIRST choice, but we had chickened out due to the political climate there. We are convinced that the financial problem and the phone call from the agency were the hand of God at work telling us our son was in Colombia. We are currently on "any day now" alert for the call. We've been that way for 11 weeks, so it's really lost a lot of it's excitement and anticipation. We've already started thinking about #2 AND #3. We're thinking about twin girls, though we're not yet sure from where. China has been mentioned a lot, as have waiting child lists from various countries.

Hello!

My name is Lisa and we adopted from China on February 1st of this year. Our beautiful daughter, Emily, was 11 months 1 week old at "gotcha day" and is now a happy little 18 month old.

We started the process in August of 2002 and our papers were sent to China in February 2003 (we moved causing a slight delay in the homestudy). We received her gorgeous referral on November 17, 2003--our older daughter's 8th birthday!

We traveled to China on January 29th and returned on February 11th. It was the trip of a lifetime!

We are thinking of returning to China for our 3rd daughter. We have been doing a lot of praying and hope to have the answer soon!!

Default Hi

Hi

My name is Kelly. As my sig says, I'm currently 30w pregnant and really excited as it is #1. But, my partner and I have always wanted to adopt because we have many adoptions on our families and really think the idea is wonderful.

We would have adopted our first child but need a larger place (we only have a 1 bedroom) and we're not ready to sell yet so we opted to get pg first.

So, I'm here to learn all I can from you ladies so the minute we move we can start w/ some paperwork and have "gotcha" day with #2.

Best of luck to you all who are in the middle of adopting.

Kelly

My name is heather, and I am the lucky mom of a 9 1/2 month old baby boy thru adoption. The adoption is set to be finalized sometime this month or early next.

We adopted "officially" through social services doing what they call a kinship adoption. Our son is my best friend's grandson. We were all set to adopt while the BM was pregnant but she changed her mind when the nurse suggested she breast feed the baby. Well, BM was 15 and still a child and had no idea what a sick baby looked like so DS ended up in the hospital at 2 weeks and flatlined 5 times. He was in the hospital for 4 weeks and then he came home to us.

It has been a rollercoaster ride that is for sure. The BM signed over rights very quickly and she does want us to have DS but social services has about a bajillion hoops for us to jump through! I am actually able to get pregnant decently easily for a pcos'er but I feel that adoption was and is the right choice for us. We plan on adopting one more once DS is older.

Good luck on this bumpy but amazing ride!!!!

My name is Delila. Dh husband and I are in the process of a domestic adoption. Currently we are advertising for a bm. We are only in our second week of advertising. We hope to get lucky. I don't know much about agency adoptions. We do have an attorney to handle our adoption. Can we do both at the same time??? This whole process is quite confusing but I am learning more each day.

Hi! I'm Michelle and our DD is 10 weeks old. She was brought to us through open adoption. My DH and I decided to pursue adoption after many prayers and knowing IVF was not for us. We went through a local agency and our birthmom was a "drop in" at the hospital in labor ready to deliver. She chose our lifebook and we got the call to come to the hospital to get our daughter! What is so awesome was that it was almost 9 months to the day we turned our lifebook in that she was born. We have an awesome relationship with our birthmom and her family. It has been so peaceful and not one problem in her placement. Finalization should be in Dec. Our social worker comes 2 more times and then we are all done! We will pursue #2 when Zoe is a year old!

Sincerely,
Michelle

Hi my name is Beverly. My ex-husband (now) and I adopted domestically in December, 1999. We started the process of a social services adoption by becoming foster parents in 1997 after several years of ttc. After 2 years of searching for our child, we were connected with our bm through her aunt, who worked with a friend of my Mom's in Florida (we live in Ohio). Met the bm about 3 months before delivery. Were invited to the delivery, but she delivered in less than 6 hours (who would have thought that a 16 yr old having her first baby would deliver that fast!!). Missed the delivery by 2 hours, but still got to be the third one to hold her. Got to take our beautiful angel home from the hospital and named her Kendra Angel (the bm name is Angela). It has been the most rewarding experience. The homestudy process surely makes you question if having children is right (as it is designed to do). I'm convinced that Kendra was always meant to be my daughter, god just put her in another tummy (as we describe it to our daughter). I think it was his way of saving me from the pain of childbirth. I think most cysters would agree that those of us that adopt so through enough pain that we don't need anymore.

By the way...great idea to post our intros. I never get tired of talking about my beautiful angel. Thanks.

I got goosebumps reading this! What a beautiful way of phrasing adoption! I feel exactly the same way!!

Thanks for all the responses! I'm so excited to have such wonderful women to share this experience with!

I, too, think Beverly nailed it on the head with what she wrote. Not too many people understand what I mean when I tell them that when I began my research, I focused on Guatemala b/c I was convinced that that was where my child was waiting for me. If you don't mind, Beverly, I'm going to jot that quote down in my adoption journal (I'm keeping track of the whole process and my thoughts/feelings thinking that one day my daughter might like to read about how she came to us.) That sounds like a perfect way to explain adoption to a young child!

For the past few days I've just been bursting. We received our contract from the agency and a big "Guatemala Adoption Guide" that they put together to help us through this journey. It made everything seem so real! (Cutting the first check for the first of many payments probably helped!)

Thanks again and I hope people keep posting!! Have a great weekend!

Jess

Hi!

I'm Dawn and my husband and I have a two year old daughter through a domestic adoption. It has been the most wonderful experience. Yes, we hit bumps along the way but it was so worth it! Our adoption was semi-open. We got to meet and visit her birthmother 4 months prior to Erin's birth. I was able to go to her weekly pre-natal check ups. My husband and I were present for an ultrasound. And, I was able to be in the delivery room when Erin was born. It was breathtaking! I was the first one to hold Erin. It seems like just yesterday.

We are in the process of another domestic adoption through the same agency. We are in the waiting phase. We have found that the waiting is much easier for the second one than it was for the first! We have faith that when it is meant to be--it will happen. I am just a little anxious for "the call".

Thanks for starting this sweetpea. It is so nice to read everyones stories.

Dawn
