My doctor, Dr. Leigh Barrell at Rome Women's Health Center, is fantastic. I went for my annual exam after skipping several years in my early and mid twenties. I told her about my periods which came sporadically (about every 3 months) and my weight gain (40lbs. in 3 years). She went over my family history (diabetes and thyroid issues) and did some blood test. My blood sugar levels were within normal range, but I didn't want to go on birth control or a fertility drug because I wanted to solve the issue causing my problem. She went over all my issues and we settled on Metformin along with diet and exercise. The diet has been the hardest part and I struggled with severe headaches when I first started on Metformin. I have finally found a generic brand that doesn't seem to bother me as badly. I try to eat whole grains, lean meat, and lots of veggies. I drink a ton of water. I am supposed to work out 5 days a week for an hour, but that doesn't always happen. My periods are becoming more regular about 45 days apart and not nearly as heavy or painful. I have lost about 15 pounds. It is slowing going, but I feel a lot better. My husband and I are going to start trying for a baby soon.
Without Dr. Barrell none of this would been possible. She checks my glucose and hormone levels about every 8 weeks. She is not just doctor, but an educator. She is wonderfully kind and understanding!!
