I went to a new Gyn for the first time in years this week... I was instantly reminded of why I hate going there. I was going there with a 'problem visit' since I seem to have some sort of infection I just can't kick lately.
She did the basic exam and then moved on to my yearly. She was already running behind on her appointments and had a fairly brisk manner to her, which is fine, but I guess I should have been more firm about my dislike and the pain involved when I have an exam.
I swear, I almost cry every time because of the pain. The worst part is they always start with too large of an 'instrument' which is hell. Only after it's apparent that it's not working do they switch to the smallest size they have, which is still downright painful.
Now, to be fair, I guess I should have requested the 'small' size from the start but I guess I figured that since this was my first real appointment after me being married for a few years, that things would go 'easier'. I guess I was wrong.
The worst part is that on top of the infection, some skin got torn a little from the exam. Ouchie. Now that it's been a couple days I feel better, but it's not quite healed up yet I think.
Maybe I'm a wimp, I don't know. I've never compared visits with anyone else, beyond the obvious 'well that was uncomfortable' type comments. Does anyone else have this problem when they go on their visits? If so, how do you handle it and calm yourself down?
Even my bloodpressure was through the roof compared to my norm because I was worked up about it going in to begin with. I try to relax, I really do, but the pain is just reinforced every time and there's no way around it.
Maybe I need to start having a few shots before I go in next time so I'm numb.

I normally have issues with my yearly. Sometimes I wonder if it's because of...my lack of male suitors, I should say - but obviously that doesn't matter. The NP who did mine last time was rather nice and didn't seem rushed at all, but I still had that issue of pain and overall uncomfortable violated-ish feelings!
Not sure what to say since I haven't resolved the issue myself...but I sympathize.

I used to have a problem because I would get all tense. They kept changing my doctors on me. I went to a big practice and I swear, it was like a rotating door sometimes. I finally found one that I like. She is a NP and never rushed and very gentle. I have yet to see the doctor for this practice.
I think that you need to be VERY explicit before the exam even starts. If they choose to ignore you are you are uncomfortable, switch doctors. We all need to go once a year, so if you don't like the doctor, it makes it harder to go.
Personally I would switch because of the torn skin. She had to notice that. If she is too rushed, you aren't getting the care you need.
I am sorry it was so bad. When you find one that you are comfortable with, it is so much better and you won't get as stresses/tense.
I have a very gentle doctor had yet have always experienced some discomfort.
I don't usually have any problems with the spectulums except that they are uncomfortable. When they use that giant Q-tip to scrape some cells off my cervix, though, I always get a nauseating crampy feeling.
And I always have some slight bleeding afterwards.
I always ask for the small one up front. There is no need to use the large one! The more you tense up, the more painful it will be. I try to take a deep breath and relax. Now the breast exam bothers me more than the pap smear. And I acutally hate going to the dentist more than I hate the gyno!

I am very lucky in that area! I have the best gyn! He is very gentle, kind, and always takes his time to talk as long as you need him! He is just simply a jewel!!

I thought i woz the only person suffering from this problem!! The last year when i got pregnant for the first time i had only been married for 2 months (I woz a virgin before that who never even used a tampon). I changed three doctors due to this problem of inserting the transvaginal scan.
Now one year later i still have the same problem but slightly better. The best way to deal with it is to ask them that u insert it by yourself. This is the gentlest way and it works perfectly for me. I don't think any doctor wud object about that.
Good luck, and hope this helps you.

that's horrible that she didn't know she ripped your skin!
It's never exactly been a pleasent or comfortable feeling for me, but never painful. Have you ever mentioned it to a gyno? I wonder if it's your tensing up or something else...
