Default It's the progesterone!

Ok, I'm severely depressed. So depressed that I'm leaving school to get my life back together. But I've been doing some research, because I think my depression is caused mainly by hormones. This is all very unoffical, but I think I'm either deficient in progesterone, or have too much estrogen, or some combination thereof. And, I've been doing research, and I found that progesterone is an antidepressant hormone. So, I was thinking of taking some NPC or something (I need to see a doc first and formeost.), and get myself some help!

i agree with you that hormones definitely play a role in depression. in fact before i was dx with pcos i was told that i was "just" depressed and given paxil. thank goodness i had the sense about me to not take his dx and began to research and found out about pcos. since taking met and geting my cycles back on track its amazing how much more sane i feel. good luck and i hope you get the help you need. drs can be so hard headed sometimes!

Default Paxil!!! Eck!

I had a doctor put me on Paxil because of my Depression , pre-PCOS diagnoises . It was the worst thing that ever happened to me. I had tons of side effects one being that in the 4 months i had been taking it I gained 40 lbs!!!!! To say the least I stopped taking it and Im still fighting with losing that weight. Definitely do your research and get several dr.'s opinons before you start any meds or agree with any diagnoises. It took a Physicians Assistant not a Doctor to finally realize that my depression/acne/weight/extra hair/ etc.. was something actually tied in together.

Default funny story about paxill

when i went to the dr i went because once again my cycle was messed up and i was determined to find out what was wrong with me. i was not gonna take yet another "bandaid" bcp. at the time i did not know about pcos but i knew that what was happening to me was not normal. he said my hormones were off probably due to stress and that he could give me bcp to fix it. so i ask him why cant you draw blood to figure out which hormones were messed up and just give me hrt. i didnt want or need bcp. he tells me its either bcp or a complete hysterectomy. i was 27!!!! i started to cry, duh!!! so he said i was depressed. he sent me home with xanex and paxill, and of course bcp! he scared me so bad i really began to question myself. that was until i happened upon an article in a glamour mag that talked about pcos. anyways, long story to let you know that once i was dx and given met and my hormones straightened out i felt much saner and i would love to give that dr a piece of my mind!

Tallybarry, I'm so sorry about what happened to you. I'm glad you fixed that. What a #$(*&%!!!! I wouldn't take and BCPs either. They don't do much at all.

Eponine, I'm sorry you are having such a hard time. If you try the progesterone cream, make sure you get a good quality one. There are some "clones" on the market that are not very good. Hormones can cause so many problems. I hope you feel better soon and are able to go back to school. Hugs, Lendi

Thanks Lendi, for you kind words. I'm feeling much better already, and I haven't even left school yet! Just knowing that I'm going to get help makes me feel tons better. What brands of NPC do you recommend? I have no clue, as I haven't done any research.

Mine is progesta-care. But, my book, by Dr. Lee says to make sure it is natural progesterone and has at least 400milligrams of progesterone per oz. and up to 600 milligrams. I think you can get a prescription as well. Some other creams and products that have the recommended progesterone concentrations are : balance cream, bio balance, e'pro balance, endau, eternal woman, femgest, gentle changes, happy pms, heaven sent, kikoro balance, nutragest, natural prog., natural woman, pytogest, pro-soy max, probalance, procreme plus, pro fem, progest, progestacare, progesterone, progesterone-trans., pro-osteo-all, pure prog. gel, renewed balance, serenity for women, and supragest.
I bought a book because I thought I was peri-menopausal, but progesterone is needed, and lacking in women of all ages. Hope this helps a bit. Lendi

It is 2 books in one. What your Doctor may not tell you about Premenopause and What your Doctor may not tell you about menopause. They were written by John R. Lee, M.D. It also has information on PMS. Breast cancer, osteoporosis. He does a good job of explaining what is going on in our bodies both before and during perimenopause and menopause and talks about progesterone cream and hormone imbalances a lot. I don't know how old you are, but premenopause can start in your 30's although the 40 are more often. But, even without, our bodies still do some strange things, especially with PCOS. Good luck. Keep in touch. Lendi

It's actually the overabundance of testosterone that's causing the depression... common sense says so, because that is one of the problems of PCOS, and a body in hormonal dis-ease is going to get depressed. The way to counteract that is with something with estrogen or estrogen-like constituents. Progesterone cream is one of those options. I take several herbs, but no progesterone as of now. I've been thinking about the cream again, though, as I only feel about 80% better, and am ready to get well. I took Pro-Gest a few years ago, and did get some results, but I was very sick, and needed to do some other things to get better fast, mainly taking strong prescription meds to get me under control again... now I'm off the meds, and ready to try again. Hang in there Eponine... things always work out the way they are supposed to... especially if we get out of the way and let it happen.
