Default safe decongestant while on levothyroxine?

Since I just started on the levothyroxine (I think that's just generic synthroid)I asked a pharmacist today if there were any OTC cold/allergy meds I could take. She said I couldn't take any decongestants at all! The seasons are starting to change here, so my allergies and sinuses are making me feel terrible.

Have any of you been able to take those kinds of drugs safely?

I've taken both sudafed and claritin-D (which has psuedoephedrine in it) with no problems. Your pharmacist is being overly cautious because she probably doesn't know your health history enough to feel comfortable giving you an OK.

When all else fails ask your doc.

You have no idea how good it is to hear that! I plan to call my doc first thing tomorrow morning. Hopefully, he'll ok something.

It always worries me when doctors differ so much on medications -- mine said that I could take anything that I'd taken in the past. I went ahead and took some benadryl allergy and sinus; I just won't take any within several hours of the thyroid meds.

Thank you for the reponses, ladies!

I have never been advised to avoid decongestants...on the contrary I have been advised to use them if the circumstances require them.

I haven't been advised not to use decongestants either. I would be interested to know what the reasoning is.
