My Mood: Points: 3,825.31 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 3,825.31 | saw GYN today, said met not necessary I went to by GYN today, and I had to basically beg her to test me to see I if I'm IR and she said even if I was, there is no need to take met cause I'm not trying to have a child. My periods are irregular ( haven't had one since march, and that one was from prometrium) and I am very heavy (240lbs).
What do you guys think? I have read a lot of stories on here about it helping with weight and your cycle. Should I get a second opinion?

If you're IR, and many with PCOS are, then Met will allow your body to use insulin more efficiently which should help reduce the total amount of insulin that your body produces. And that should help decrease your immediate symptoms as well as improve the long-term health outlook (reducing risk of diabetes, heart disease, etc). It can also make it easier to lose weight, which improves your symptoms even more and will break that vicious PCOS cycle.
Sure, met can help you ovulate and maintain a pregnancy...but the only reason it does that is because it helps your body work more like a normal person's. So why wouldn't you want that even if you're not TTC? Sounds like your doctor needs to be better informed!

My Mood: Points: 4,106.67 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,106.67 | I think you need a second opinion. I'm new to the PCOS game, but I do know that Metformin is pretty much standard treatment for it. Also, it helps you get your weight under control not just get pregnant. I would see 1 - 2 other Reproductive Endocrinologists ( fertility experts ). See what they think. Don't just go to an OBGYN, I went undiagnosed for years by mine....

Points: 257.70 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 257.70 | I have had some bad experience with gynecologist and hormone related problems. Please, please, please go to an ENDOCRINOLOGIST. Walking around with IR EVEN if you are not trying to get pregnant is like walking around with a time bomb. Please, consult an endocrinologist. |

My Mood: Points: 5,252.23 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 5,252.23 | I agree, see an endocrinologist. I am TTC and was just diagnosed with PCOS. My OB/GYN was planning on putting me on clomid. I see an edocrinologist (this is just a regular endo, not a reproductive endo) for thyroid issues and happened to have an appointment with her around the time I was diagnosed with the PCOS. I told her my OB/GYN thought I had it and that he was planning on putting me on clomid. She said met is much better and when I sent her my bloodwork results, she called in a prescription for met immediately. To me, it seems like endocrinologists are better at treating the root cause of PCOS rather than putting a band aid on it. |

The RE I saw was fantastic - very in-the-know about PCOS and he did a full battery of tests and then was able to explain what all the results meant. He even had me meet with a nutrionist since I was IR. I would definitely try to get into one or the other if your insurance allows it.
