Saw palmetto reduces the active form of testosterone (DHT) in the body and therefor prevents androgenic effects like: male pattern baldness, excess body hair, acne, oily skin, dandruff.
I took 160mg twice a day of standardized version (see links in my sig. for reasons why I chose this type) for 6 months and noticed a dramatic decrease in all of the above symptoms.
It took about 2 weeks for my scalp hair to stop shedding. Maybe a month for my skin to clear up/get less oily and it's been great since then! maybe 2 months for me to notice my body and facial hair diminishing, cannot recall the timeline exactly on that one, that was a bit slower to respond. I did sort of notice I wasn't plucking chin hairs as much at first. Now my facial hair hardly grows at all and I don't pluck anymore. Body hair is finer as well. I have had new growth on top of my head stick around for months, it's quite long now.
I also have to say a caveat that my diet has changed greatly, and I lost a significant amount of weight. I also take b-complex and flax seed oil and evening primrose oil. But I did not see dramatic changes in my hair and skin until the saw palm.
