Question Saw Palmetto

I am looking for some feedback, positive or negative, on Saw Palmetto for the excessive hair growth. I have been on Spironolactone since the middle of September and all it has done is make my leg hair more sparse. I am tired of spending $10 a month on something that isn't working!

Kathy,

I haven' tried saw palmetto, but found this info when I was doing some research:

Saw Palmetto (serenoa serrulata)
Source: Berries.
Actions: Sedative, tonic, diuretic, anabolic.
Therapeutic Uses: Urinary problems, prostate problems, impotence and low libido, building up the body.
Typical preparation: Tablets, infusion, decoction.
Contraindications: None known.

The site has brief descriptions of other herbs and uses:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/compleme...bs.shtml#agnus

From the info, it doesn't look like saw palmetto has a lot to do with hair. BUT since it is an anabolic, it will help your body to use protein better (to build muscle, etc.), and hair is made of protein, so it may be worth a try. Since I've increased my protein intake, my hair is really nice and shiny.

Good luck.

Sorry, Kathy. I'm so out of it. For some reason I thought you were asking about hair loss. So, in your case, according to my reasoning, saw palmetto probably won't help.

I have found Saw Palmetto to be helpful for both excess body hair and hair loss on head and this is why-- both are caused by testosterone and other androgens. (think about male hair patterns, they tend to go bald while getting a lot of body hair)

SP blocks the active form of testosterone called DHT. I've had GREAT success with it. I couldn't take Spiro becuase it gave me migraines.

However, I also controlled my insulin at the same tiem with diet and exercise. Insulin also stimulates more androgens.

I've been thinking about starting SP for excessive hair, as well. However, we're going to start actively ttc soon. Maureen, I see that you're pregnant (congrats!), did you stop taking it?

Thank you
Yes, for several months, I stopped taking it when I ovulated, so I was only taking it for the beginning 12 days out of the month. And I was only on a maintenance dosage of 160mg/day because I had been taking it for 6 months at that point.

I figured I had at least a week of not taking it until the embryo implanted and then several weeks until the sex organs developed. (I completely stopped when I got a positive HPT.) I have seen other cysters follow this plan as well.

Thanks for the info, Maureen. I think I'll hold off taking it...maybe until after I'm done breastfeeding (ok, can you tell I'm really hoping and thinking of the future here!).

Here's to six more healthy months for you!
