Default Saw Palmetto Not To Be Taken By Women?

After reading lots of posts from fellow cysters, I decided to start taking more supplements, vitamins, etc.

One I was about to purchase was Saw Palmetto. After reading the label, though, I decided not to buy it.

It said that Saw Palmetto is not intended for women, especially those pregnant, nursing or trying to conceive.

Should that concern me or should I just take it anyway?

Any comments would be appreciated.

Are you TTC right now??
I took Saw Palmetto, it is soppose to help with excess body hair. For me it made a slight difference. No adverse side effects. It's hard to go the natural route because you have to take so much of the stuff. Like the saw palmetto, 8 pills a day. It also depends on what else are you taking.
Good Luck

Nope, I'm not trying to conceive, but was still concerned that it said it was not intended for women.

I was just curious if there are any detrimental effects if it is taken by a woman.

Yeah they make it really hard. They say not reccommended for women, but they don't tell you why. Thats the risky part of taking natural remedies that are not FDA approved. No literature goes along with it.

This is just a guess but perhaps it is more of a concern for women who don't have excess androgens.

I think Sheri is correct. It says not intended for women but most women don't have high androgen levels. Most of us do. I'm taking it at the moment along with vitex as I have often seen it recommended for PCOS. It's early days yet for me though so I haven't yet seen any results.

The warning is there, because saw palmetto is dangerous for the male-fetuses. It can couse birht-defects. Same thing as the "Propecia" medicine for the hair-loss. If you are not TTC then there shouldn`t be a problem.

I read an article by Bill Phillips in Muscle media 2000 magazine that saw palmetto should not be used by women because not only does it stop testosterone but it also stops your estrogen from working so it is both anti androgenic and anti estrogenic. So i guess that it can cause menopausal symptoms in women and it probably is not to good for bone density either.
