Question Scared to go on Met...

I took a glucose test last week and everything came back normal luckily. My doctor wants me to go on Met any way, but after reading about all of the terrible side effects, I'm very hesitant to . Are any of you not taking Met to get regular AF again and to become pregnant? Is Met really necessary to become pregnant and to get regular AF again? Have any of you with no AF taken Clomid and Ovudril (HCG) to become pregnant and skipped Met? I'm hoping I can go straight to Clomid and Ovudril. Thanks!

I'm scared to take metformin too. It's my idea to take it though. I will start taking it tonight. Losing weight and eating healthier is supposed to do the same thing if not better than taking metformin. Thats what my RE told me. I have lost weight but AF is still not regular so I want to give it a try. If I can't handle it at least I know I can still go on to TTC without it. I did get pregnant on clomid alone back in 2004 but m/ced. Thats another reason I want to try the metformin...It's supposed to reduce M/c.

Thanks a lot for you info! Its really helpful! I emailed my doctor last night and she said based on the cysts and the lack of AF she feels this is the best way. Well, I guess that means I'm going on it . It looks like we'll be Met buddies! Good luck to you getting preggers and hopefully you'll be lucky and won't have any side effects from Met!

I was scared at first too! Just start with a low dosage and eat it with food and you will minimize the side affects. My doc just started me on 500mg per day then in 2 weeks I going to increase to 1000mg. Hopefully my body with allow me to do this. I've only been taking for 4 days now but feel great! My basal temp has also increased? Not sure if it's the metformin. My doc also has me on medroxyprogestrone since It's been 85 days since my last period. It's hard when your ttc and don't get your period. Are you guys taking vitamins? I've also started taking Selenium to help my thyroid.

I also have to take Provera because I went 3 months without AF twice, so both times my doctor gave me Provera to induce my period so I would shead my lining. Before I start Met next week, I have to talk to my fertility specialist doctor about taking vitamins, because I'm scared to combine them due to possible side effects. Thats great that you're feeling great! I hope I will too! Are there certain foods to stay away from, or that you notice give you more stomach issues than others? Also, if you do have side effects, have you taken Immodium and has it helped? Thanks!

I picked up my metformin I'm going to wait until I know will not have to drive anywhere before popping that first pill. I will let you know how it goes I'm starting out on 500mg for a week then 1000mg and finally 1500mg. I was also told if I can't get off the toilet when I increase the mgs then back down to lower dose for a while longer

You can take vitamins when you take metformin. My RE went over with me everything I was taking before giving me the RX. I take a muti vitamin that he wants me to change to a prenatal, fish oil, rx meds for my thyroid and extra 500mg of C ...When next week are you starting?

I am on clomid and met (I do have regular cycles on my own but don't ovulate) I started met in late August and have had very few side effects. I had GI distress one day and Immodium cleared it right up and I have had an upset stomach a few times. On the positive side I have lost 10 pounds without trying. No more depression and anxiety. Faical hair growth has slowed/thinned and no more acne!!! I was actually told yesterday that I had a beautiful complexion! I don't think I have ever heard that.
Try to look at the positives and start slow. I started on 100mg (500mg 2x/day) then after two weeks went to 1500mg. I always take with food and was told that can help with side effects.

I am new and just wanted to share my story. When I started ttc with my re my blood glucose came back normal and I went straight to clomid + trigger with IUI. 3 failed cycles and went to Follistim with trigger 5 failed cycles. Went on Met alone and 40 pound weight loss and a year later got pregnant on a natural cycle. My 7 week old is snoozing in his swing right now. Good luck!!! I really think Met made the difference for me. The side effects stink but it was better for me on the extended release.

Oh good, we can take vitamins then, thanks . I wasn't sure if there were certain interactions between vitamins and Met. I'm going to ask my doctor for prenatal vitamins as well. I'm starting 500 mg XR on Monday and then in two weeks from then 1000 mg, and two weeks after that 1500 mg. Good luck to you!

Has anyone had hairloss/ thinning of hair due to PCOS? Unfortauntly, I have . To those of you that have, has Met helped stopped your hairloss or made it thicker?

Thanks a lot! Thats awesome that you had such success with Met and having a baby! Congrats! I hope I'll have the same results as you did! Luckily, my doctor gave me ER as well. Just one question for you, when you were on clomid and did IUI did you have regular AF? I don't ever since I went of bcp in Feb. My doctor gave Rx Met to regulate me and ttc. Thanks!

Looks like we will be on the same dose. I'm not on XR though. I decided to start taking the pills a half at a time. Going to start with half a pill for a week and then move to one and so and so on until I'm up to three full pills. I'm seeing most everyone staying at the same dose for two weeks instead of the one week before moving up so I'm just slowing down the adjustment period some.

When will you start clomid?

Thats great that your not having any side effects! I'm crossing my fingers that I won't either. That sounds like a good plan! My doctor also wanted me to start off at a low dose and work my way up. So are you breaking a 500 mg. the pill in half? Or did your doctor prescribe you 250 mg. and you're taking one at dinner and at night? Because I was thinking of splitting them in half and I was hoping that was safe to do.
