As far as the syllabus... I welcome any suggestions for the next book, Exodus. I know that some of you are reading ahead, but please keep in mind that there are lots of people who have joined this group and some aren't able to keep a fast pace because of work, school, family, etc. and I wanted to try to move a little slow thru the first book because of this. Feel free to read ahead, and take notes as you go along, so that when those discussion threads are posted, you have yours ready to post. Thank you all for your understanding regarding this.

I have a question...Noah took the animals on his boat two by two. What does it mean when God says "Take on board with you seven pairs of every clean animal, a male and a female; one pair of every unclean animal, a male and a female; 3 and seven pairs of every kind of bird, a male and a female, to insure their survival on Earth. So there were not just two of each animal? There were seven pairs...so 14 of each animal?
Can I find the 'Message' at Walmart?

I haven't done my reading yet, so I don't know how to answer your question about the animals.
But, I found The Message at Sam's Club for about $20. I rarely go to Wal-Mart so I haven't seen it for myself, but I've been told that they have it there as well. Its really very cool, and I hope you find it to your liking.
Well I've been reading it online. I thought that I would like to have the book so I could read it other places. I've also talked DH into reading too.

Here is the verses, Miss Meme, is talking about. (I got this online from bible gateway web site & pasted it to here).

Genesis 7
1 The LORD then said to Noah, "Go into the ark, you and your whole family, because I have found you righteous in this generation. 2 Take with you seven [1] of every kind of clean animal, a male and its mate, and two of every kind of unclean animal, a male and its mate, 3 and also seven of every kind of bird, male and female, to keep their various kinds alive throughout the earth. 4 Seven days from now I will send rain on the earth for forty days and forty nights, and I will wipe from the face of the earth every living creature I have made."
5 And Noah did all that the LORD commanded him.
I just finished my reading and wanted to share with you...
**************************** My thoughts:
Genesis Chapter Four: I had some questions pop into my head as to why Abel's offering was accepted, yet Cain's was not. From what I took the scripture to say was that God just didn't like Cain's offering as much as he liked Abel's? But why? So, I looked it up it for some clarification...
Quote:
from Halley's Bible Handbook Abel's sacrifice was acceptable because his actions were righteous (1 John 3:12) and because it was offered in faith (Hebrews 11:4). It seems that God had instituted such sacrifice when sin came into the world. It was a sort of primeval picture of the atoning death of Christ.
After Cain killed his brother, God spoke to him and cursed him, but placed a mark on him so that no one would kill him, because if they did they will suffer vengeance seven times over. I'm curious... Does anyone know from your readings and other translations what kind of "mark" God would place on a person so that everyone else would know not to harm him? I imagine it was something visible to the eye. And I'm wondering if it is the opposite of the "mark of the beast"... Any ideas?
Then Lamech, who had two wives, told them that he had "killed a man for wounding" him. And if Cain is avenged seven times, then he will be avenged seventy-seven times. There was nothing in my handbook regarding this, and I"m curious has anyone read about the murder Lamech committed? I know its probably not too important to the overall, but I'm just curious.
Genesis Chapter Five: The only thing that stood out to me in this genealogy was that Enoch was somewhat favored by God. Gen.5:24 - "Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away." Through the rest of this chapter, no one else is mentioned to have walked with God, and they all died... They were not "taken away" as Enoch was, and at a much younger age then the others had died. The lifespans listed are incredible in this chapter. Its hard to believe that humans did exist beyond today's common lifespan (that is if you take the Bible as fact).
Genesis Chapter Six: Okay, I'll admit I was a bit stumped by the first part of this chapter (6:1 ? 4 especially). I wondered who the "sons of God" were. So again I turned to my handbook.
Quote:
from Halley's Bible Handbook Pre-Flood Wickedness
"The 'sons of God' are thought to have been either fallen angels, to which there may be a reference in 2 Peter 2:4 and Jude 6, or leaders in the Sethite families who intermarried with godless descendants of Cain. These abnormal marriages, whatever they were, filled the earth with corruption and violence."
According to The Message, the results of these unions of the "sons of Gods" and the daughters of men were giants. Yet in the NIV, it says "The Nephilim." Does anyone know if this means giants or if there is another translation out there to describe these people?
As far as the animals... I think I agree with living 2 be alive with her explanation. I decided to look this up in the handbook, and here's what I found:
Quote:
from Halley's Bible Handbook Gen. 6:19 - 7:5
The Animals
"In 6:19 - 21 and 7:2 it is explained that seven pairs of clean animals, but only one pair of each of the others, were to be taken into the ark. Some have calculated that there was room for 7,000 species of animals."
It goes on from there, but that's the gist of the part with the animals. The rest is about the building of the ark how Noah and his three sons couldn't have possibly built it on their own, and how they must have employed the help of perhaps thousands of people, having such a large extended family. If that's the case, and Noah's family was large enough to have thousands of people help in the building of the ark, then they all died with the flood.
So, with the ark having that much room, it does sound that living to be alive's theory could be correct. There were most likely more then just the 2 by 2 theory. Perhaps they were simply lined up in 2s to make it easier to board the ark, and that's how the 2 by 2 reference ended up in the writings that made it to the Bible. Just a thought, as I'm just speculating...
Genesis Chapter Seven: Its pretty obvious that God thought so highly of Noah that he saved he and his family from certain death, and he chose that bloodline to carry out in repopulating the earth. I can't imagine being on a big ship, with tons of animals for any length of time. The descriptions of the flood in this chapter are pretty overwhelming. Imagine the highest peak on the planet covered by 20 foot of water. Wow!
Genesis Chapter Eight: So, exactly how long were Noah, his wife and family and all the animals on the ark? I had a hard time keeping up with the times during this chapter, so I looked it up in the handbook as well...
Quote:
from Halley's Bible Handbook How much time did Noah spend in the Ark?
Noah went into the ark seven days before it begain to rain (7:4, 10).
It begain to rain on the 17th day of the 2nd month of Noah's 600th year (7:11). It rained for 40 days (7:12).
The waters flooded the earth for 150 days (7:24; 8:3).
The ark came to rest on the 17th day on the 7th month (8:4).
Noah removed the ark's covering on the 1st day of the 1st month of Noah's 601st year (8:13).
Noah and his family went out of the ark on the 27th day of the 2nd month (8:14 - 19).
This means that they were in the ark for 1 year and 17 days (5 months floating, 7 months on the mountain).
Genesis Chapter Nine: This was absolutely beautiful to me. The rainbow as the sign of God's covenant with Noah and all generations after him to not destroy the Earth by flooding ever again. I did not remember this part of the story. Now every time I look at a rainbow, it will take on a whole new meaning, and not just a cute little leprechaun looking for the pot of gold at the end of it.
Now, I am a bit confused by the curse of Canaan. I know that Noah became drunk and when one of his sons, Ham (which I read somewhere was another name for Canaan), saw that his father was passed out drunk and naked, he ran to his other 2 brothers and told them about their father. Then the two other brothers walked backward with a garment of some kind with their faces turned away to cover their father without seeing his nakedness. But, why did Noah curse the son for alerting his brothers? Was it because he had seen him naked and did nothing? The handbook just confused me further on this, so any clarification ya'll can offer would be greatly appreciated.
****************************
Thanks for reading my long-winded thoughts. I am really enjoying reading and studying the Bible with ya'll and can't wait to hear further discussion, which will hopefully help me to answer some of my many questions. Be well and God bless.
I've pasted the passage of the Bible in so I can refer to it. My thoughts about it are following the passage.
-------------------------------------------------------
New International Version.
Genesis 9
The Sons of Noah
18 The sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem, Ham and Japheth. (Ham was the father of Canaan.) 19 These were the three sons of Noah, and from them came the people who were scattered over the earth.
20 Noah, a man of the soil, proceeded [1] to plant a vineyard. 21 When he drank some of its wine, he became drunk and lay uncovered inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, saw his father's nakedness and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it across their shoulders; then they walked in backward and covered their father's nakedness. Their faces were turned the other way so that they would not see their father's nakedness.
24 When Noah awoke from his wine and found out what his youngest son had done to him, 25 he said,
"Cursed be Canaan!
The lowest of slaves
will he be to his brothers."
26 He also said,
"Blessed be the LORD , the God of Shem!
May Canaan be the slave of Shem. [2]
27 May God extend the territory of Japheth [3] ;
may Japheth live in the tents of Shem,
and may Canaan be his [4] slave."
28 After the flood Noah lived 350 years.
Footnotes
9:20 Or soil, was the first
9:26 Or be his slave
9:27 Japheth sounds like the Hebrew for extend .
9:27 Or their
Okay, the way I'm reading this, is that Noah cursed his son for doing nothing about what he had seen. Ham had seen his father passed out from drunkeness & instead of giving his father dignity - he had gone "running tales" to his brothers.
Does this make Ham the first Biblical reference to gossip?
The reason for their being 7 pairs of clean animals is because of them having to be used in sacrificial practices. There was only 2 of each unclean because Noah and his sons were not to eat them as practiced by people in those days. Pigs are included with that one. Jews to this day do not eat pork. Also I have had it brought up to me by a former pastor, that the animals were not of breeding age. Thus the clean animals would have had to age to breed and bare offspring that could be used for sacrifice in the future. Noah made a sacrifice once they left the ark. So he had to of used at least one of the clean animals.
Have a Good, and Godly Day!!!!

Originally posted by living 2 be alive Also, why was it important to mention that Lamech's second wife has a son (Tubal-Cain) and that Tubal-Cain sister is Naamah?
Finally, what was Noah's wife's name?
From above site There does not seem to be any passages in the Bible referring to her other than the account beginning in Genesis 7:7 which mentions Noah's wife. His wife is not named in the Bible for certain; however, according to Jewish tradition her name is Naamah.
Why Tubal-cain's sister (a daughter of Lamech by his wife Zillah, and sister of Tubal-cain, a descendant of Cain) should be specifically mentioned is unknown. Jewish tradition made her Noah's wife. Her name, meaning "the beautiful" or "the pleasant one," reflects the worldly mind of the Cainites, who looked for beauty rather than for character as the chief attraction in women.

Someone on another thread posted a link to the Blue Letter Bible ( http://www.blueletterbible.org/ ) and I did a search on the word Nephilim, and here's what it came up with:
Quote:
from Easton's Bible Dictionary at
The Blue Letter Bible Site above Nephilim: (Gen 6:4; Num 13:33, R.V.), giants, the Hebrew word left untranslated by the Revisers, the name of one of the Canaanitish tribes. The Revisers have, however, translated the Hebrew gibborim, in Gen 6:4, "mighty men."
That was very interesting to me, so I thought I'd share.
