I've been having some stomach problems over the past few months and its either IBS or Celiac Diseae, my specialist has ordered two scopes to take some biopsies.
The first scope is of my stomach and the second is of my intestines, and they're scheduled for the same day so lucky me gets tubes inserted orally and rectally all in a span of a few hours!
I was wondering if anybody has had these done? I've had a barium enema so I sort of know what to expect for the rectal scope. Is an actual scope going to be even more uncomfortable?
I'm surprisingly more nervous about the oral scope. Its because I have to be sedated and the last time I was sedated for a procedure was when I was 3 so I don't remember much. I'm just paranoid that it won't take (this happened to a friend of mine, she was paralyzed/couldn't speak but felt EVERYTHING!) or I'll have a reaction.
I'm a big wimp when it comes to these types of things! I need reassurance that it won't be that bad!
I've never had the test either but I wish you the best. I was scheduled for a similar test back in November 03 (I was having terrible constipation) but I found out I was pregnant right before the test so they couldn't do it. Anyway I hope it goes well and you get the answers you need to feel better.

Hi Hon....My Grandpa and my 7 year old cousin both had these tests done and they were both diagnosed with celiac disease. Their tests went fine without any sort of complications or problems. I have never had them done myself, but just wanted to let you know that I will be praying for you, hon! Do you have other symptoms of celiac? I know some about it, since it is in my family a couple times, so pm me if you ever want to talk about it at all! I'm sure you will be fine, hon. I'll be praying for you!

PM me about my Grandma's newly published Gluten Free Cookbook!
I've had both these tests done. I, too, had them on the same day. My question is this: are you going to be sedated? If you are, then it won't be bad at all, you probably won't remember a thing. A word of caution, I was supposed to be sedated and the incompetant nurses screwed up my IV and not only did I have the pain of the fluids going into the tissue of my arm and hand instead of my vein, I felt the entirety of both procedures.
Don't be worried though. If you have a good Dr and will be sedated, everything should go well. But if they administer the anesthesia and you are still awake, speak up!

The endoscopy/biopsy (stomach) is no big deal. They injected something in my IV and put a small plastic thing to hold my mouth open and I don't remember a thing after that. I guess they had trouble with me choking so they gave me more drugs till it was fine. I don't remember ANY of that. The doc said that's really the only reason they give drugs is to put the scope in easier with you all relaxed. I woke up a few times in the recovery room before I actually remember waking up. When I finally felt awake, I felt great because I had been in pain for about 9 months steady before that, and whatever the drug was, it relieved the pain for a while. I just put my shoes on, signed papers and went home. They didn't find anything, btw. I wish you the best with your tests. Don't be ashamed to be nervous, its normal. You'll do fine. I hope they find some useful info for you.

"the last time I was sedated for a procedure was when I was 3 so I don't remember much." This is why you shouldn't worry.
They didn't give me enough anesthesia during my endoscopy, so I woke up as they were putting the tube down my throat - YIKES! I tried to pull it out (I WAS choking, after all). They put me under in a flash, and I don't remember anything else. My throat was a little sore the rest of the day, but it wasn't too bad.

Thanks for all of the responses!
I'm not nearly as nervous after reading these, I'm just a big wimp when it comes to medical things.
My best friend's sister has had these done and I'll be seeing her in a few weeks so I'm sure I'll be asking her lots of questions.
Good luck to you! I'm DEFINITELY a wimp! (Such a wimp that I'm already scared about having my annual physical next week!) Just feel proud of yourself that no matter how scared you are to do this, you are going ahead with it and doing something good for yourself!
