I have been recently diagnosed with PCOS. I left my Docs. office feeling lost and I just dont even really understand. I read the info and I cant help but wondering am i ever going to be able to have children and i going to have diabetes. My main question if any of you can help me is: Did I get this by being over weight and will it go away if i loose weight. I have always been thin until i got married and for the past 3yrs i have been about 75lbs. overweight. My husband and I desperatly want children, are the chances good? I am really just a mess. I dont know what to do. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
I was told by my doctor that once you get your insulin under control by living a healthier lifestyle then your chances of getting pregnant our greater. She also, said that there are fertility options out there. Me and my hubby have not looked into fertility so I dont have many answers for you there. We are focusing on getting healthy and taking it from there. However, i learned quick into this not to put everything on my shoulders. When i first found out I went into high gear exercising and watching what I ate and burned myself out. We cant change things over night and loosing weight/getting healthy might not instantly help us get pregnant. I have also been told if you are seriously trying to conceive to have your hubby checked as well, as he could possibly have issues too. My hubby said we will do that later for some reason he isnt excited about it.

Even losing a percentage of your weight will help! The medical community doesn't know if extra weight contributes to PCOS or not, but it is definitely related, and in many cases PCOS makes it more difficult to lose weight unless you change your eating habits (if you're insulin resistant). There are a lot of diets out there that specifically help PCOS people-- you can read about them on the diet and exercise forum here. For help trying to conceive, the trying to conceive (TTC) forum is a great place to post your questions. PCOS makes it more difficult to have children-- it may take a little longer than it would a non-PCOS woman and may require medical intervention, but it is by no means impossible! There are plenty of PCOS mommies and pregnant cysters on the boards. This is a great resource!
My doctor told me that even 5% can make a huge difference. Plus, it's a lot easier to think about 5% percent at a time than the whole amount I'd like to lose.
Don't be afraid. There are hundreds of women on this board who have had babies--it just takes extra work sometimes!!
Sometiems I don't think weight matters with PCOS. Even when I was thinner I had symptoms. Low carbing and Metformin are a good combination for helping battle PCOS.
Browse throught the forums and you will learn a lot!!!!
Not every woman with PCOS will get diabetes or have trouble conceiving. You might want to check the TTC & Pregnancy & Mommy boards for some reassurance.
I lost a lot of weight, but I still had to go on Metformin for my insulin resistance. I am hoping that I will not develop diabetes. Some health organizations are now saying everyone over 30 should be tested for IR/diabetes. It is that big of a problem in the general population, not just with PCOSers.
Hi and Welcome!
Don't be discouraged. You can control this and get your symptoms under control. Just read, read, read. To make you feel better, I went on Metformin, lost weight, and have had 2 precious babies so it can be done! Let me know if you want to chat. I don't know what will work for you but will help you find answers. You are at the best place possible to find answers!!! These women are incredible!!!
hi, i was in a mess when i found out i had PCOS well still am but i brought a book called PCOS by colette harris with dr adam carey and there is everything you need to no, it really help, ive been TTC for 3years and it is very hard but you should keep trying there is always hope. good luck x
I know exactly how you are feeling. When I left the Dr office, I went online and researched PCOS and cried for days. There is hope. There more research I did the better I felt. There are so many options for getting pregnant. I was advised by my dr that although I have cysts on my ovaries, my cervix and uterus are healthy. She told me that I will just need extra help with having a baby. The thing about POCS, is that the symptoms can go away on their own. I have also ovulated on my own also. So don't give up hope. You just may need extra help to get pregnant but it can still happen.I know exactly how you are feeling. When I left the Dr office, I went online and researched PCOS and cried for days. You have come to the right place cyster! I know exactly how you feel. When I was diagnosed, for the first few days, I was reallt depressed because I thought this surely meant that I would never have children. But, SC has helped me so much! Everyone has their own experience with PCOS and they all have wonderful insights to share. Here I am three weeks after diganosis and I am much more optimistic that I was when I left the Dr. I try to look at my diagnosis as a blessing....at least now I know what it wrong and I have a plan of action.
Keep your chin up and good luck.
