My Mood: Points: 18,260.17 Bank: 1,093.80 Total Points: 19,353.97 | Seizures...PCOS Related??? Okay, this is going to be kinda lengthy so please bear with me. About 3 years ago I started having these spells that I at first thought were panic or anxiety attacks. My heart would race and I would just kinda space out for a second. The best way I can explain it is that it was like extreme deja vu. Kind of like I was in a dream. Everything around me seemed strange and way to familiar at the same time. It would only last for about 10-15 seconds and it would stop as quickly as it started, and leave me feeling disoriented and kind of tired. It seemed like they would always happen when I was extremely tired and mostly when I was resting or about to drift off to sleep. And it got be quite often. Well, about a year ago, these spells got worse.
One evening sitting in my recliner, I was about to drift off to sleep and I could feel one coming on. Or what I thought was one. But I noticed it felt somehow different. I had a different feeling in my mouth and nose. That was the last thing I remembered. I awoke to the ringing of the telephone. Talking to my SIL I realized my tongue was terribly sore and the right side of my shirt just below my collar bone was wet. I was very confused. So bad that I had to ask her what day it was. I honestly couldn't remember. After we got off the phone I went to the bathroom and looked. The side of my right side of my tongue looked as if it had been put through a meat grinder. I knew then it must have been a seizure.
I went to my family dr who sent me to a neurologist, who put me through every kind of test imaginable and all he could tell me was that I have a mild irritation on my left temporal lobe. Makes sense that I've always chewed the right side of my tongue I guess. Just doesn't make sense why this is happening NOW after 27 year of normalcy. I am now on a drug called Topamax for seizures and Celexa because the Topamax causes me to be depressed to the point of wanting to pull my hair out or worse. I have had I think 3 other full blown seizures since last summer (when I wasn't taking the meds) and every single one of them have been when I was going to sleep.
But anyway, today I was searching on google and there seems to be some connection between seizures and PCOS. I believe if I read correctly that the hormonal imbalance caused by PCOS can bring on the seizures. So, what i was wondering is if anyone else has ever had this problem? It's really scary because my husband works on the river and I'm always by myself when this happens. I feel it coming on but there's absolutely nothing at all I can do about it. Anyone else out there??
TIA!
ETA: here's a link to an article I read about PCOS and seizures. Just a small note about it. http://www.drdonnica.com/fastfacts/00004292.htm

I hear a Kenogenic diet helps with seizures. I was given Topamoax for migrains but I didn't take it much. This Topamax has been used for depression as well. I am not sure as to why it's making you feel worse. Do you think that you Dr. could try something else or maybe you could try the diet.
All in all, I certainly hope you feel better and find a solution.

My Mood: Points: 2,089.80 Bank: 3,624.99 Total Points: 5,714.79 | I've been DX with epilepsy since childhood. (around 6 or 8) Seizures went away when I was 15 or so and I took myself off my meds. ( I hate pills) I havent had another seizure since.
Well, all of the sudden July '04 I started having them again but this time different. With mine I just go into a daydream state. Like I'm staring off into space. Sometimes I can bring myself out but sometimes I cant. They dont last long. Couple of secs. I went into the hosp for test. They said I was having seizure activity but I dont think my dr thought It was much bc he didnt treat me like it was.
So far I've switched meds 3 diff times in the past year.
I asked my Dr about the link. He had no clue. But then again, I changed bc I dont think he had a clue about what was up with me either.
I've seen on another website that Lamictal can actually reverse some PCOS features. I dont know what that means.
Here's what I found. http://www.epilepsy.com/info/women_pcos.html
BTW, I'm also taking Topamax and I'm also taking Zonagran. Ever taken that one?
(And I'm from MS too!)

My Mood: Points: 553.78 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 553.78 | well this so describes me to a tee except i dont go to the unconcious state yet. I can have up 30 of these little seisures ( i always get smell and taste, a strong feeling of deja vu, a pounding heart rate and an awful intense feeling of heat all through my body) a day which leave me shattered for days - i seem to keep these to a minimum when i eat a normal western diet but when i change to low carb/low gi they seem to step up a pace or two. Not sure whether that is to do with detoxing or not. I have done lots of googling too and always thought that u got pcos and then these seisures but maybe i am wrong will look up the site u listed |

Points: 4,551.77 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,551.77 | did you search this site for seizures? there are other threads here. My small seizure like episodes (drs never took me too seriously, but I'm sure they were small seizures caused by hormones, they started after birth of my first child) stopped when I started taking Met and Seroquel. I still get get a small episode once in awhile when I am very tired.
Mine are like small "shocks" with jerks, vary from slight to convulsion like, can be single or multiple (lots of them!!!!!), usually come when I'm trying to fall asleep. Much worse when I am tired or under stress. I can tell when I'm likely to get them and I feel tired, dazed, confused (scared) afterwards. They feel like an electrical circuit in my brain has shorted!
There is a connection between Diabetes and seizures. thanks for these new links.

My Mood: Points: 4,320.67 Bank: 0.00 Total Points: 4,320.67 | I am sure your doctors have looked into this already, but seizures can be an effect of hypoglyceamia. (Low blood sugar) Certainly from what Sally had said, there might be some link between blood sugar and these symptoms.
Since Metformin is specifically designed to alter insulin and blood sugar levels, do you think it could be a good idea to look at your dosage?

It would happen I would sometimes have problems with my speech the first time it happened the Dr said. I was faking it. The second time they said it was psycho symatic the third time they actually ran a test and I had some seziure like activity but couldn't tell for sure but I found it got somewhat better when I was on lexapro for depression
