I had this leading up to the point of being diagnosed with PCOS. For me, it seems to have been caused by elevated prolactin, a hormone that is only supposed to be elevated when one is pregnant.
Other reasons for sore boobs: being pregnant, being on birthcontrol, too much caffeine. As for the birth control, taking Vitamin E helped me to not be sore. But if you aren't preg or on birth control, you may want to ask your doctor about the prolactin. It can be elevated due to a tiny tumor on the pituitary gland. Or for mysterious reasons, such as pcos. I was scanned for a pituitary adenoma, and they found none, so they attributed the wacky hormones to pcos.
