Question sensitive subject

hi guys, i am hoping that you can help me with your male perspective.

my husband went to have a s.a. and unfortunately he has a low sperm count.
the dr. also said that he found a varicose vein in the scrotum, and that this may restrict blood flow, causing the temp to rise and this could inhibit the production of sperm. dr. wants to "clip" the varicose vein, and in his experience, this procedure usually helps return the production of sperm return to normal.

ok, the problem is, due to our beloved hmo, all procedures must be ok'd by our primary care physician, and so, the urologist is waiting for the ok, but my dh has yet to call his pcp to have this procedure approved. the day that my dh came home from his dr's appt, he was very upset. i know exactly how he feels, because i get this way every month, so i dont want to be insensitive to his feelings, as he is always so careful of mine, but i dont know how to bring up the fact that i believe he is putting off this procedure.
any suggestions as to how i should handle this?
please help!!!

thanks,
michelle

Hi Michelle, I'm obviously not one of "the boys" and I don't know how to tell yo uto bring up the subject with your DH but I wanted to share my story with you...

My DH was also diagnosed with Varicocele (sp?) and we were advised to have the surgery. After some research and careful thought we decided against it.
1) DH's numbers were not great but far from hopeless

2)The docs had yet to make me ovulate so if we might need IVF anyway because of me, why should we waste the time (it takes up to a year to see results) and the money (very expensive and NOT covered by our insurance) for a surgery that has a 50% success rate.

Instead, I out DH on vitamins which did improve his overall count but could not correct the morphology or motility and we proceded with IUI's.

I got PG on my second cycle of injectible meds with IUI so obviously the surgery wasn't as necessary as the Urologist would have us believe.

My DH's count was: 8.5million / 40% motility / 4% morphology
and the count improved to 17 million with vitamins.

Good Luck!
