I have been on Met for a little over 3 months. I have a cycle every single month since, which I thank God for! The thing is I get cramps to bad that I can barely stand it. I usually have a high tolerance for pain so it's odd for me to not be able to take the pain from cramps. Is this normal with Met ?
HI, I'm sorry no one has answered your question since yesterday. I'm not on Met. So, I don't have an answer for you on that one. Have you posed the same question on the medications/metformin board?

It is normal for "some".
I had a terrible time with Met. One of the rare side effects is muscle pain.
Well your uteris is made of muscle!!
Please read carefully over the physicians info at the web site for Glucophage.
The words used are different from what we use everyday but it still breaks down to the following "possible" side effects...
muscle pain
fatigue
anxiety
depresiion
ovary hormone changes(reason used for fertility treatment)
flu like symptoms
diaria(sp?)
bloating
endema(swelling of other locations of the body)
hives
itching
Thats all I can recall at the moment.
Hang in there,
Patty

Hi. I know exactly what your going through. Ive always had cramps along with my period. But since going on glucophage mine have been about 10 times worse. The glucophage has really helped me since ive been on it. I know have a period every month and im very thankful for that. I kept telling myself that I could tell with the cramps because it was allowing me to have a period each month. But this last month I started wondering how long I could handle it. Usually I cramp the first day & then the second day is alot better. Not this month. I cramped really badly for 2 days. Nothing I took helped at all. These cramps were very intense. I do know exactly how you feel, but I have no idea of anything that helps with the pain. Ive tried everything myself and so far nothing has helped. You could try putting a heating pad on your tummy. That has helped me a few times. It doesnt take all the pain away but it does ease the pain a little & makes it more tolarable. I wish I could be of more help.

I'm having severe cramps with my cycles now that I'm on Met. I've been on Met 4 months, have been cycling regularly (for the first time ever) but boy have I had some wicked cramping. In fact last month it was so severe that the otc Pamprin didn't touch the pain and I was up an entire night wondering if it would stop. Plus (TMI) my flow is much heavier than I expected.
Spoke to my ob/gyn this week about it (appointment) and she said forget the otc menstrual aids and to try 600-800mg of ibuprofin every 4-6 hours max for no more than about a day. She said that some folks go on narcotics for pain (like vicoden) but I have a bad reaction to most narcotic pain killers so she recommended the ibuprofin.
Also, if you can bump up your level of exercize (esp sexual activity) before hand it is supposed to help, as is taking more vitamin C of all things (haven't tried it yet).
Thanks everyone! I have had alot of the symptoms that were listed. I knew it could make me have flu like symptoms, but I thought the fatigue was all in my head! I guess I should have posted this in the Glucophage/Metformin forum.
Thank you all again!
Fortunately, met seems to be easing my menstrual cramps. I just wanted to make a few suggestions for dealing with cramps. No medication has ever helped my cramps. What I do is use a heating pad, soak in hot baths, and drink lots of hot drinks like hot tea. I have read that chamomile tea is suppose to help with cramps, so lately that is what I drink. I have dealt with painful periods since I was 12 years old and this is the only things that help me. My ob/gyn has prescribed medications for the pain and they do nothing except irritate my stomach.

Metformin 1500mg per day
Doxyclycline 150mg per day
Sorry no one responded to your post Christy, sometimes you have to ask a couple of times (in my online experience) before the right person sees the post.
I'm day 4 AF right now and the dr. recommended 600 mg is not touching these bad boy cramps. I don't like taking ibuprofen (or other drugs) cuz it's not good for the liver but on the other hand, I'm not overly thrilled with mind numbing cramps either. Plus back when I was 'sort of' regular (if you could call it that) years ago I remember only one day of cramping etc and now it's like 3 or 4 days of this really strong pain.
Guess it's one of the things about Met that we have to deal with. I'm cycling, ovulating (it seems) and have been finally able to lose some weight on Met so that's the plus side. I don't really mind the pain, it's just that I am so ineffective, non productive, tired on days like this.
I've always read that workign out helps these cramps but when they hit I'm so very tired and in such pain that working out is like the one thing I can NOT do (I usually work out each morning). How do folks manage?
