Default Sexual Side Effects (Sorry TMI)

Ok, so I'm wondering if I'm the only one experiencing sexual side effects from medication. I take Effexor XR 75mg and not only has my libido plummetted, but my sexual response has also. DH and I were trying to be intimate (and of course, I wasn't all that interested to start with) but once things got going, I couldn't get hardly any physical sexual response even though I was finally totally into what we were doing and it was very frustrating. (couldn't orgasm no matter how hard we tried when normally its very easy for me) Eventually we just gave up on me. Has this happened to anyone else? Are there any anti-depressants where this doesn't happen? I would like to have my intimate life back...thanks for any and all responses.

I'm also taking Efexor, and I have the same problem. Or I'll have NO sex drive at all.

Sorry that this is happening for you! I have the problem when I am on the BCP. Is there anyway that they could switch antidepressants?? Or have you worked real hard to find one that helps your depression and wouldn't want to risk switching??

The Effexor is the first anti-depressant I tried and it is working, but I am still feeling irriated occasionally...other than that, the sexual side effects are the only other thing thats bothersome...actually downright horrible. Before I started taking it we had a very lustful sex life and now I'm like, sorry, I'm broken right now. LOL I'm wondering if this side effect will happen regardless of what I take or if its mainly associated with this particular medication...I hope there is something the Dr. can do...I go back for a check up tomorrow.

I can relate! I take Zoloft and Xanax and I am verrrrrrrrrrrry uninterested in sex! Some of the time my DH can get me into it but most of the time not interested! Then I will hit a spot every once in awhile where I want it all the time for a week or so. DH says he can deal with the dry spells since he gets the one week every so often!

Prozac here, same problem - at least with the response. My libido is largely unaffected. That said, I NEVER think about sex just randomly anymore. It requires a bit of "hey maybe we should" and then I'm there. The bf has taken it as a personal challenge. Doesn't always work - that said, it's fun trying (for a while at least )

Good luck! Ellen

i had that exact same problem when i was on cipramil (dont know the collective name for the medication) a few years ago. mentally i wanted sex but physically it was impossible. we tried for like two and a half hours to make me come once and nothing! its like the area down there was majorly desensitised and it was so so frustrating!!! i was really worried that the same thing would happen again when i went on antidepressants again a few months ago but so far everything has been fine, i cannot begin to tell u how relieved i am! i specifically asked the doc for one that was less likely to cause the side effects that happened last time. it might be worth asking u doctor about that to. cause in my experince if it does that to u from the start it doesnt improve with time. i think i am on fluxoitine (i think thats just another name for prozac)
good luck, hope u can get ur groove on again soon lol

Default Also on Effexor - this works for me!!!!

Hello there,
I had this problem for years and was extremely frustrated! First I was on Paxil, which was very very helpful, but I couldn't orgasm if my life depended on it. Tried Zoloft, Celexa, same thing.

Effexor XR (75 mg) is very good for me and the sexual problem is less than with Paxil, but still very significant, so for the past 2-3 years, I've taken Wellbutrin IN ADDITION to the Effexor - I take 75 mg Wellbutrin (generic Buproprion) every day with lunch. I used to take 150 mg, but it made me a little tense. Sometimes, if I want an extra good response - I take a Wellbuprion about an hour before sex. I don't need to, though - regained my sex life with this method, which is well supported by my psychiatrist and in things I've read. Oh - Regular, no sustained release (SR/XR) for me - SR kept me up allllll night.....
Give it a try if you can...I suggest it highly.

I couldn't have the big O no matter what we tried when I was on Effexor. It really helped the depression so I was scared to go off it, but it got very frustrating both for me and my dh. Now I take Celexa and Wellbutrin and everything works!!!

I take Effexor also & I do notice a drop in drive. I used to want it all the time. Now I can do w/o it for days. I'm now a lot harder to get my juices flowing. We now have to use lube which was never the case before. It does take a lot for me to orgasm & here lately I haven't been able to at all. It is the only downside of the med. for me. I have to decide what I like better to be happy, not suicidal, & w/ no drive or to be suicidal, unhappy, & horny. I guess I'd rather not be suicidal but it does suck when it comes to how much my drive has dropped. The Dr. says he'll only keep me on it for 6 mths. & then the problem should straighten out. Only 4-5 mths. to go & I pray my drive will come back. My DH is on Wellbutrin as well. As far as I know it's the only one that doesn't have sexual side effects.

Pippa,

I used to take effexor as well, How long have you been on it? It took my body 2 months to get used to it. My doctor told me to hang in there, he warned me that I would feel like crap for the first month or so, but if I could hang on it would kick in and I would feel great! He was right! I felt terrible at first, I was tired, sick to my stomach (lost 15 lbs) didn't want to eat, and no sex drive. After about 2 months I was feeling awesome! DH couldn't keep me off! lol! I hope this helps...*Hugs to you

when I was on prozac, I had no problems whatsoever w/ my level of desire (as always, horny as hell!), but I always had trouble getting to the big O, which frustrated my ex, which eventually led him to cheat on me (because he was feeling inadequate). He now finally understands that it was me, not him (but it was still no excuse for cheating), and this past April, I cut the prozac in half (from 40 to 20) and added wellbutrin (150, XL), and it works like a charm. Heck, I even get multiples now! So if it's really bothering you, I'd talk to your doctor about it to see what options you have. And also talk to your DH about it, because this concerns both of you, and just like with any problem in a relationship, communication is the key. Good luck!
