Okay so typically I never shaved the bikini area or waxed it. I might of trimmed it or whatever but that's it. (Sorry if this is TMI...lol) Anyway, I started shaving and it took forever, gave me razor burn, and I couldn't get it smooth enough.... too many curvy areas. lol Any tips on how to do this right? I've seen that Body Bare shaver thing and thought about investing in it if it really makes things as smooth as it says. Does anyone have it?
Being overweight makes me too self-conscious to go get waxed, not to mention the pain and cost.
Hehe it's a delicate subject, so here it goes... I use a razor to shave a lot of that area and I can tell you what I did to work up to that. I initially shaved with the direction of the hair, not against it. That goes a long way to prevent razor burn and in-grown hairs. Yeah, it won't be perfectly smooth but it will be close. Once the skin toughens up a bit you can shave across the grain of the hair, but I've never been able to shave against the hair. Use short strokes with the razor, long strokes tend to pull the skin more. Use a soap that you can actually see what you are doing, if you use thick shaving cream you may not see very well and might nick yourself. Flatten out curves by pulling or pushing on skin to make it into a more flat surface that you can go over with the razor.
Of course, another choice is to ditch the razor entirely and use a hair removal cream or something like that.

Reason: grammar
Shaving "down there" seems to be a process of getting your skin used to it... like the poster above me said, start gently, going with the grain and going over each area only once. Trim the hair very short first so it's easier to shave. Use a good shaving cream, or better yet use Bikini Zone anti-bumps shave gel which is made specifically for this purpose. It's clear so you can see what you're doing. If you shave every day or two then it's really quick and easy to keep it up. After a while your skin gets used to it and you can shave against the grain for a closer shave (but it's important to still go over every area only once, or twice at the most if you have to.) Try to shave near the end of your shower so your skin is softened up, and so you can then get out of the shower and apply something to your skin. Witch hazel works well. I also made a mix of tea tree oil, vitamin e oil, and witch hazel (in an olive oil base) which works great to heal razor burn. However the more you shave the less you will need to use anything like that.
I don't shave the entire area, but most of it... so I think this would apply to shaving it bare also. Because my hair is so dark and thick there, I can never get 100% smooth, but it's good enough and my boyfriend has never complained. I am pretty satisfied with my method. I do have to shave it every day though because my hair grows so fast!

i have the exact same problem!! what i've started doing though is shaving in the direction the hair grows rather than against it. it's not as quite as smooth, but it still looks neat and i have absolutely no ingrown hairs and no more itchy crotch!!(tmi...sorry) and the boyfriend doesn't seem to mind
