Default Shortage of Paxil?

I wasn't exactly sure where to look this up, so I was hoping you all have heard about this. Is there now a shortage of Paxil? My mom has IBS, and she takes Paxil to relax her stomach. She gets her meds from the mail order thing from her insurance, and they sent her a letter yesterday telling her they have no clue when or if she'll get her paxil again because there is a shortage from the drug company. They are always pressuring her to get cheaper alternatives for drugs, so we were wondering if this shortage is really true or if this is another of their excuses to once again keep her from getting her meds. She's got about 2 weeks of her meds currently, so she's got to figure out something to do by that time.

Has anyone heard about this shortage?

I am on paxil cr.. I thought it was only the cr that was being stopped.. I went to refill my prescription and they said I have to go to my doctor to change it.. I asked way and she told me that the pills were breaking.. seeing that they are a time controlled release tablet and not being effective.. Well they have been woorking greeat for me. I am scared to change to a different pill. I also heard from my doctor that the patent was running out and the makers would not be getting paid for the pill. I don't know what is the truth everyone I ask tell me different stories.... Good luck switching pills..

Thanks for the repy. I didn't know if she was taking the cr kind, but I do remember an article several months ago about the pills breaking. They work really well for her too, so at the time she thought that was fishy too. She really didn't want to have to go to her doctor again for nothing more than this, but sounds like she'll have to.

Good luck on switching your meds. I used to suffer from depression and it took many, many tries to get a med to work for me because I suffered so many physcial side effects. It would scare me to be facing the situation you and my mother are. I hope the switchover goes smoothly for you.
