Default should I ask for metformin?

I'm a very skinny cyster. Too skinny. Don't seem to put on weight, however much I eat. I'm currently taking bcp Diane and spiro, and want to start ttc in about 6 months time. Obviously I'll have to stop taking bcp and spiro, which I am petrified about, as I have horrendous acne and hairloss when I'm not taking them. Also, I never get my period.

My question is, might metformin work for me? I was thinking of asking my doctor if I could start taking metformin a few months before stopping spiro and bcp, in the hope that it might be working by the time I stop them. Does that sound reasonable?

Any advice much appreciated.

I am also fairly thin! I am 5'7" and weigh 122. I have been on met and Yaz together for the last seven months. I haven't lost any weight during that time. My doctor told me that if I did start to see any weight loss that I could start drinking protein shakes. In all honesty, I don't feel a lot different in terms of appetite on met. The one thing I noticed is I have started eating several small meals a day, because I tend to feel full faster. It has curbed my sugar cravings!
But, I am kind of in the same boat about ttc. I want to start next summer/fall, but my doctor has recommended to contine the met and BCP until that time.
Anyways, I think you should talk to your doctor and let him know what you are planning. Then you will both be able to come up with a good plan for the next six months! Good luck!

Yep... Met takes me about 3-4 months time to conceive everytime, so if you know ahead of time... might as well get on it ahead of the game. it doesn't work for everyone, but its pretty inexpensive and uninvasive, doesn't increase your chance of multiples and can be used in conjunction with other fertility meds (although I didn't need anything else) It did cause me to lose some weight, but I was still able to conceive while a bit underweight (I conceived my son when I was 107 lbs and 5'4.5" AND still breastfeeding and I've never been tested for IR) Good luck!

Thanks for the info girls. Much appreciated. I've read it can be difficult to conceive if you're under weight. I'm 5'5" and weigh about 44kg (I think that's about 97lb - we're metric here in Oz). I know that's too little, but I just don't seem to put on weight, whatever I eat. Apart from the pcos I'm very healthy, though I never do any exercise. I eat well, big meals, healthy foods. In a way I'm lucky I guess, but I'm wondering if I should make more of an effort to put on some weight before ttc?
