Default Should I Change the Way I Take Metformin?

I was wondering...I normally try and take met all in the morning (2000mg). it is not extended/slow release though. For those of you who take regular met, is it better (more effective) to space out the doses into two (as directed) or take all at once in the morning?

I think when I first started taking it I took it spread out and did well and lost some weight.

Of course, now I can't lose anything!

Seems all drs are saying that it should be spread out. I take 500mg 3 times a day with breakfast, lunch, and dinner.

I was with nurse yesterday.. I am trying to get back on to metforim. I went off it as I had severe acid reflux and nausea.. I am back to one tab now with no probs... BUT I must get to two. She said metforim is the key to getting preg with pcos... Good news I suppose for all your met girls...

tips she gave me:
take two tabs of acidphillis with each metforim tab i.e. one met in morning with breaky and two acidphillis and then same again in evening. She said to do this for one month. This will stop nausea. Also sip boiled water with fresh ginger... The acidphillis must be the good ones out of a health store and found in their fridge..

Also dont drink too much water.. keep to 2.5-3 ltres a day.. too much water dilutes the metforim and causes the nasty side effects...

Yeah, I was told one 500mg pill in the morning, one in the afternoon and one with dinner. As it is, I take one when i get up and another before I go to bed. I never quite got round to that third pill a day.

Just in case you're wondering about the reasoning for taking it spread out rather than all at once, here's my theory:

The Met effects your insulin and blood sugar (how your body handles it, etc) and by spreading it out, you're giving your body a steady, continuous effect. If you take it all at once (and it's not the extended release) you're giving your body one HUGE dose and then nothing else so things will end up out of whack by the time you need to take that next dose.

Just my two cents

lexibelle-how are you doing on 3000mg cinnamon. I take 2000mg. Was wondering if the increase has helped you?

Also, I spread out my doses the past few days and have been fine. I still have GI troubles with the Met even though I have cut way back on carbs. I guess I just may be sensitive to the Met?????

Hello Ladies.... I take 500mg 4x a day. 2 pills in the morning with breakfast and 2 pills with supper. I find it very easy to take them at these times and a RARELY forget.... if I do, it is at supper b/c I am out, so if I do forget, I just take them when I get home no matter the time.

I definitely notice a difference between the days that I take the 3000mg vs days I only get 2000mg (depends on if I remember to refill my pill bottle I bring to work!). For me Met + Cinnamon has given me the best results energy and appetite-wise. I had to go a couple weeks without (ran out, didn't have the chance to go buy a new bottle) and I was just DRAGGING. I couldn't figure out what was wrong, then I realized I hadn't taken the Cinnamon.

The only other thing I can suggest to maybe help with the Met is chase it with a dose of Immodium or something, maybe? I know there are some herbs/teas you can take that can help a little.

Honestly, I think I've just been REALLY lucky with my lack of s/e's ... the only thing that's REALLY played havoc with my stomach and sent me to the bathroom was Oatmeal. I have NO clue why, especially since I had no problems when I was eating eggs and bacon, unless it's simply because of the increased carb count.

Hernandez99: Thanks for the info - that just reaffirms my idea that I need to up my dosage to 2000mg for it to be effective for TTC :|

Unless your Dr. told you otherwise, I would definetly spread it out. I am currently taking 500mg at breakfast and 1000mg at dinner. About 6 months ago I took 1000mg breakfast, 1000 lunch (which is when I felt the worst) and 1000mg at dinner..not pleasant..How do you feel taking at all at once?

Triniman's gal- I'm not exactly sure how long met took to bring on AF for me because I have taken met for 2 1/2 years and just went off the bcp 2 months ago. I'm 7 weeks pregnant now so it did end up working quickly after I got off the bcp! Before met, I didn't ovulate at all for years..

All the best...
