Default Should I get checked out?

Hello, I'm 16 and started my periods nearly 3 years ago. I started pretty regular but now am anything between once every 3- 5 months and sometimes again a week after finishing. I have acne which so far antibiotics haven't cleared and have what I think is excessive hair growth; I found a black hair on my chin the other day...
My mum's friend has this disorder, as does my stepmum. Just wondering if this is enough to be worried about, because last time I told the doctor about my periods she wasn't worried at all.
Thanks for any help.

teenagers often have irregular periods. My gyno also didn't worry about me for a long time because she said that was normal. Maybe mention the acne, hair, and family history and see if she could run blood tests or something.

I would discuss it with your doctor. I finally found a doc willing to listen that didn't brush off all of my other concerns, but not till the age of 30!! My endocrinologist has been great but she did say that they like to get started treating at a younger age. I think that you could find out one way or another, and then start addressing issues like IR etc., maybe before things get "out of control" like they are for some who start late once more symptoms are present and the symptoms are worse.
For example, my doc said the spiro would help new hair growth, but that it wasn't likely to affect the unwanted hair I already had on my chin. Know how many docs i complained to about my chin hair? But they all just blew me off, perhaps cause they didn't see it as a a "big" problem because i pluck obsessively so they never really saw how bad it could be? I don't know. Anyways, I'm just a big believer in getting checked out so that you can start to learn to make positive changes in your life. The earlier the better in my mind. I wish I'd learned about IR earlier in life, maybe my diet battle wouldn't be so bad. Who knows.

Good luck deciding.

Thank you. Will do.
Do all women in America have gynos?
Doctors here in the Uk are a nightmare to get hold of, so hopefully next time I'll get some tests sorted so I'm not back in a few months

Yes, usually women above 18 have a gyn they see yearly or every 2 years. It sounds like you should be checked. The idea that teens are often irregular with periods is now being questioned by some. Even young women from some people groups are more likely to have facial hair.

Hello there,

I'm from the UK, and began to show symptoms when I was a teenager, but it wasn't recognised then. From what you say, I think it's enough to ask your GP to refer you to see a Gynaecologist - as getting a diagnosis early can only be a good thing. Some basic blood tests and an ultrasound should do it.

I know we don't get regular check ups over here without asking (that would probably bankrupt the NHS!!) but if you ask your GP and insist, they will do it (in fact they have to, although no-one tells you that).

I don't want to pre-empt your doctor, but at your age I went on Dianette, which dealt very nicely with my acne (and would also sort out your hair issues too). And it also sorted out my later contraception needs very nicely!

Hope you sort everything out.
