Default should I go to primary doc to get thyroid script or wait for endo?

Hi Everyone,

I recently suffered a miscarriage (6.5 weeks) and this is when they found out that I am hypothyriod. According to my OBGYN, my level TSH level was high. She retested me two weeks later and my level was still a 11.5. I immediatey called an endo. and can not get in until the end of the month. I want to start ttc as soon as possible (after a normal period as my obgyn recommended) but I know it might take time for my TSH to regulate. Should I go to my primary doc and discuss this with them and go on a thyroid med.? Or should I wait, untreated, and go to the appt. at the end of the month?
ANY advice would be appreciated!!

I'm so sorry to hear about your MC. I got my thyroid checked out after a MC as well. I first went to my primary doc who said my thyroid felt enlarged and sent me for bloodwork. After my bloodwork results came in, she called and said I was fine. I was still suspecting something was wrong, so I made an appointment with an endocrinologist. She looked at the bloodwork my primary doc did and said that while I was in the normal range (which is why my primary doc said I was fine) I was in the lowest end of normal and this was not good enough, especially with TTC. So she ran more tests and discovered I had thyroid antibodies which meant I had hashimotos, and put me on synthroid. She was good about keeping up with bloodwork and has upped my dosage 3 times since I first saw her 4 months ago. So overall, I was MUCH happier with the treatment I got from the endocrinologist. But who knows, your general doc may be more knowledgeable than mine was. Good luck!

I am also TTC and have hypothyroidism with hashimotos. I was diagnosed initially with a TSH of 24. After being on synthroid for nearly a year the endo upped my dosage to 112mg from 25mg. I go to the endo quite often especially bc I am ttc. Studies show that women who have an high TSH level are at risks for miscarriges and certain birth defects. When you get pregnant DEFINATELY monitor your TSH all the time. Good luck!

The proper dosage for thyroid hormone replacement therapy is calculated by a simple equation, taking into account the patient's weight and their targeted TSH level. Any doctor that is able to prescribe medicine should have this information available.

That being said, as a PP mentioned, you might have something else going on other than simple hypothyroidism, so you would definitely still want to see a specialist.
