I feel like my RE and everyone else has given me the go to do IVF. I am just unsure if my body mass is too much to hold a "normal" pregnancy. Wouldn't I be at a higher risk for GD and having a low birth weight baby?

NatureGirl,
I say go for it! When I got pregnant with my son I weighed 270 lbs!!! Now I have a beautiful 5 year old son! I did get GD around 29 weeks, however, it was able to be controlled with diet and medication. However, I got pregnant with clomid, not IVF.
Yes, there are more risks and possible complications. Only you can decide and it can be hard.
Some other things to consider:
-age? If you are already looking at IVF you have IF issues. Things won't get easier with age. Even with IVF I believe your odds of successful TTC go down with age. Conversely, odds of complications (like GD and low-birth weight and others) go up! Double whammy.
- Ability to lose weight? Do you think that taking some time to address diet/exercise/other will help you drop some weight? If you've been trying for a while with little/no success, what's going to change? If you haven't been trying why not? Are there other things (e.g., met) that might help you on the way?
If age is an issue I wouldn't wait. At what point is age an issue? Some say 35. For others it's 30 or 40.
If you you've been having some success at dropping weight, then I might postpone TTC for a few months and see how I'm doing... you could set mini-goals (2-3 months) and revisit the issue. They say that even losing some weight is helpful.
If you haven't been very successful losing weight (for whatever reason) and the doc gives a green light, I'd probably go forward. Note that many of the TTC meds, especially with the injectables for IVF can cause additional weight gain. So you'll probably want to keep working on the weight/health issue.

Me? Conceived and had DD at 39 -- I was 'overweight' (but had been dropping some weight and getting more exercise). Currently 41, 12w+ pg with #2 (and thrilled). BMI over 30 this go around. I'll be getting some extra monitoring at the end, both due to age and my elevated BMI. I have more risks this go around. I didn't feel I had the luxury to wait and try to do something about my weight at 41. I was kicking myself a bit for not working harder post-pg (while not yet TTC), but that's not so constructive.
Good luck whatever you decide.
Tia

I was 210 with my daughter at first weigh in
and 170 after she was born. Had GD and ate super healthy- so everything worked out. We just can't gain the typical wieght since we are starting out with extra '-)
If you ended up GD, more likely the baby would be high birth weight. Anyway, if your doctor is cool with it, and you don't want to wait, go for it. If you are not comfortable with your current weight and wish to lose more before conceiving, then wait a bit. Good luck!

I am TTC and weigh 228 at 5'8". I worry too about the things you do. I am going ahead and TTC, I have been working out went from the 265 to 228.5(gotta add that .5)LOL. When I get pg. I will still workout but it will of course be in different form then the intense workout I have now. I will walk 40 to 60 min 3 times a week on the treadmill for as long as I can. I think that will help. Good luck with your decision.

I def say go for it! All of the complications you mentioned can also be experienced in women who do not have high BMI's. To view links or images in this forum your post count must be 10 or greater. You currently have 0 posts.

Thank you all for your input. It truly makes me feel good and still a bit unsure of what to do. I know that there are always going to be risks. I just want to have a healthy baby, as I'm sure all of you do as well. I would just feel awful if I could have done something beforehand to prevent any bad stuff from happening. I don't want to just be pregnant, I want the whole thing to work out.
I am 308 and `5'6". Nothing is going to hold me back! My RE has never mentioned anything about my weight to me. I have slightly elevated BP but no other co-morbidities. I am a true believer that you can be overweight and still be healthy!

I weighed more than you do when I had my daughter.......I did have GD and I controlled it with diet and lil bits of exercise.....I had a GREAT pregnancy and was induced on her due date...she was 6lb 7oz....they thought she was a 8 1/2 pound baby...glad they were wrong! I was around 250lb when I fell pregnant with twins from clomid...I had a good pregnancy medically pretty much, but got every bad side effect you could..but anyone can get that..
I had BP issues 2 months prior to falling pregnant, but that was controlled fine with meds throughout the pregnancy and DID NOT get GD, even tohugh everyone said I would for being larger and carrying 2 placentas....
So its possible to have a good pregnancy and be a larger women....Complications can happen in anyone, even the smallest of ladies....

I was overweight for all 3 of my PG's that went to term (180, 225, 200). I was never Dx with GD, but my first 2 DSs were high birth weight (9 12, & 10 1), and they both had low blood sugar after they were born, and needed formula until my milk came in. So I might have had a bit of GD with them, but DS#3 was 8 2, and didn't have low blood sugar after he was born, so I know for sure NO GD with him.
Just because you are over weight, doesn't mean that you will get GD. Being IR might increase your chances of getting GD.
