Question Should I keep my appt?

I have a gyno appt tomorrow and am not sure what to do. The reason I am going is that my periods are very irregular and I was referred by an endocrinologist. The endo dr. said that I need to go on the Pill to start my periods again. So I made a gyno appt for that. Well guess what! AF suddenly made an appearance yesterday after over a year! I am still surprised about that, didn't expext it at all. I was wondering why I had breast tenderness, well, now I know!
Anyways, should I go to my appt accompanied by AF, or should I reschedule another time?? I don't know what the gyno would have done, if any tests, being it my first appt. Maybe the appt. will just be the dr. asking questions about my history, who knows. Do they do any exams while your menstruating?

oops, I wanted to mention also that I am going back to see my Endo soon.
He will expext some results from my Gyno appt. So if I cancel my Gyno appt, I will have to reschedule my Endo appt as well! LoL, I am getting confused now. Thanks for any advice.

I would call the nurse first thing in the morning, explain that the appt is to get a prescription to start regulating your period. Maybe they will still see you, so they can get you started on the Pill ASAP. Usually they don't do exams during your period because it can interfere with the results of your Pap smear. But this exam isn't about a Pap smear, completely. So, I'd ask the advice of the nurse if you should reschedule, but you can still at least get info from the doc, even without and exam. And they can do the usual stuff like a breast exam, urinalysis, etc.

I would keep your appointment. I had a cervical polyp which was causing constant bleeding and she said they could still do my PAP that day, i guess it may depend on the circumstances and how heavy the flow is.

Good Luck! I hope its a Gyno versed in PCOS!

I thought about it and decided to keep the appointment. It took almost 3 months for an appointment and now that it is here, I am not about to give it up now! If nothing else, I still want to discuss the Pill with the doctor. I am very hesitant about taking the Pill because this would be my first prescription for pills besides antibiotics as a child. I know there are risks and it really scares me. Also, trying to lose weight, I don't need the side affect of possible weight gain that goes along with it. I just hope that the Pill is going to be the only medication that will be prescribed to me!
Did anyone say NO to the pill and try and do it on your own? I heard that by losing weight, it is possible for your periods to return to normal. I much prefer to go that route, being the big scaredy cat that I am.

I am trying the natural route myself first. I am working with an acupuncturist/Dr of Oriental Medicine to see if we can get my body balanced to where it heals and will make the hormones in the correct amounts on its own. We are using diet and supplements (as well as my actual acupuncture treatments) -- its only the first week so not much has changed yet other than the diet...

My Nurse Practitioner gave me a Rx for Metformin but she agreed that I could try diet and supplementation first and if that does not work trying the Metformin.

I really did not want to take the pill, I was on it years ago and it gave me bad headaches.

Is there an alternative practitioner in your area you can go to and at least have a consult?

There are some of us that aren't overweight that don't ovulate w/out help--losing weight can help, but is no guarantee...

As far as your exam--I had several months with non-stop spotting/bleeding and have had everything from pap smears to vaginal ultrasounds without rescheduling. They can do most (if not all) of the exam during AF, though.

That is an interesting option, going to an acupuncturist! I will look more into that and see about finding one in my area. Thanks for the great information Claire, I would have never thought about going that route. Well, I am all set for my appointment now and definitely have more questions to ask. Thank you everyone for replying to my post.

even though you got your period, it's still iregullar. i get mine probably every 5-8 weeks, so i do get it, but it's irregular. but doctors always want to get pcos patients on bcp's and that may not be what you need. do you know what's causing the irregular periods? do you know your testosterone levels? your insulin levels? are you insulin resistant or diabetic? i was put on bcps for 9 years before i saw a good endo who fianlly got the root of the problem. if your endo hasn't looked into these things, you should get a second opinion.

yep, my doctor sent me to the Endo because my insulin level was a little high. My Endo took one look at me and said that I probably have PCOS and that I need BC to get it regulated. He also said that I don't have Diabetes yet! Which I am really worried about since it is in my family. So that is why I have a Gyno appt today.

There ARE options other than birth control pills to regulate your periods and normalize your hormones. I personally am against using birth control pills because I feel they just mask the symptoms of PCOS and don't get to the root cause of it, which most of the time is insulin resistance. Also for me, they always give me horrible headaches and I gain weight on them, which is very counterproductive to my goal. Metformin is typically used to reduce insulin resistance, and many cysters have found that taking it faithfully has restored their cycles, lowered their insulin levels, and gotten their hormones back in line. It can also help with weight loss. There are also "alternative remedies" such as Vitex which can help with regulating your periods, Cinnamon can be used to help combat insulin resistance, and progesterone cream (NPC) can be used to help get a consistent regular menstrual cycle.

They can do other tests even if you're not comfortable having an internal exam during AF. But, as the others have said, it can and has been done...I'm sure you're not the first bleeding woman your gyn has examined. That's part of their job.

Good luck on your appointment...which reminds me, I need to call and schedule mine! LOL
