I started Metformin on Tuesday along with a no carb diet and half an hour of exercise everyday. I weighed myself this a.m. and have already lost 8lbs in 4 days!!!! I feel great though. I have no fatigue, no flighty brain and I have motivation. I have no side effects so far either. I am worried about the rapid weight loss though. Has anyone else experienced this type of hyper-weight loss on Met???

You're experiencing water loss (not body fat) from the removal of carbs in your diet. This is not 'met' related.

Another factor that can influence the scale is glycogen. Think of glycogen as a fuel tank full of stored carbohydrate. Some glycogen is stored in the liver and some is stored the muscles themselves. This energy reserve weighs more than a pound and it’s packaged with 3-4 pounds of water when it’s stored. Your glycogen supply will shrink during the day if you fail to take in enough carbohydrates. As the glycogen supply shrinks you will experience a small imperceptible increase in appetite and your body will restore this fuel reserve along with it’s associated water. It’s normal to experience glycogen and water weight shifts of up to 2 pounds per day even with no changes in your calorie intake or activity level. These fluctuations have nothing to do with fat loss, although they can make for some unnecessarily dramatic weigh-ins if you’re prone to obsessing over the number on the scale.

Generally, it’s only possible to lose 1-2 pounds of fat per week. When you follow a very low calorie diet that causes your weight to drop 10 pounds in 7 days, it’s physically impossible for all of that to be fat. What you’re really losing is water, glycogen, and muscle.
Thanks for the info. I done a search and just couldnt find anything to explain it for me........
The doctor said I am prediabetic, so wanted me to cut out carbs for now to see if my blood sugar levels drop, then slowly introduce them again. I was a huge carb eater......pasta 3-4 times a week and potatoes with EVERY meal, bean soups, lots of rice....like a carb addict I guess. I had fasting glucose test yesterday, so hopefully I hear back today about my numbers.
my nutritionist told me to stop eating the starchy and or refined carbs. so I did for the most part. lost 10 pounds in 5 days. scared the hell out of me. called her back and told her what happened and she said that it was mostly water weight. it did balance out after about 2 weeks and its not coming off as easy anymore (darn lol). I wouldnt be too concerned unless it doesnt balance out.

When I first started Met a few years ago, my weight dropped like CRAZY! I was so excited to tell my DR I thought it was a miracle drug, no side effects, I loved it! Well, I go a little ahead of myself, the weight loss drastically leveled off and eventually the side effects caught up with me and I was not able to handle it anymore eventually. I changed to Met ER which I like more, SO FAR no side effects for me!
Keep up the great diet and exercise changes! Good job!
