This might be a bit lengthy, please do bear with me.

I have never been diagnosed with PCOS although I highly suspect I have it.

I’m 24 now and it started when I was 17 and my mom decided that my irregular periods (about 3 times in a year) warranted a look from my GP. My GP suspected PCOS because I was also overweight, she ran a blood panel. The test showed that my T-Uptake was low (at 0.6), FTI was high (at 15.0 ug/dl) and my FSH low (at 2.7 mIU/ml).

Whatever that meant, my GP then referred me to a gynaecologist. Maybe it was due to my age, they did not really explain what was going to for me. Basically I went for an abdom US, which showed nothing. I was told I didn’t have PCOS and given BCP which was supposed to make me regular. It did. I took them consistently for about a year and a half and I stopped. Figured that since nothing was wrong with me I didn’t need any medication.

Anyway, things took a turn for the better after I stopped taking BCP. My periods became more regular. It came about once every 1.5-2 months. It wasn’t clockwork, but at least it made an appearance. It was awfully light though. It was only 3 days long and was light enough for pantiliners.

But recently, it started going haywire again. My period would disappear for 5 months and appear once before taking a 3-month break and stuff like this. However, this time I was more concerned as my younger sister just discovered 4 demoid cysts in both her ovaries, the bigger 2 being 10cm and 4 cm long. It was amazing as she had no symptoms and it was discovered only accidentally as she was going through a course in ultrasound and she volunteered herself in class.

So, I got myself checked out again. I went for another abdom US which showed some small cystic foci at the region of the cervix. My GP said that it was ok to leave it and just watch it for any changes or new symptoms. My right ovary was 3.5cc and left 8.4cc in volume. My GP didn’t say anything about the sizes (but later on, when looking through my sister’s textbooks, it said that it was abnormal if one ovary is at least twice the size of the other). My GP said that everything was normal as far as he could see, nothing to indicate my irregular period. But he did mention that he could refer me to a specialist if I wanted to pursue as they would be able to do further tests.

Some of my hesitation lie in the costs. I reside in Singapore and I really hate going to a government-subsidized specialist, as the waiting time in the clinic is horrendous. It takes at least 3 months for a non-emergency specialist appointment. But if I should choose a private specialist, a single appointment would cost me at least USD$150 (converted). My health insurance only covers pittance; USD$52 (converted) per specialist visit, it also requires a referral letter.

This is where I need some advice. I’m not currently in a relationship or thinking of starting a family. Should I pursue this now or wait till later when it becomes an issue should I think of starting a family etc?

Whew.. It's long isn't it?
Thanks in advance all.
