I have a question that may also be helpful for other ladies, so I decided to open a new Thread about this issue...
I have been taking MET for a month now, but to be honest this was a something I started to do on my own, not by medical prescription. I am under treatment with a Fertility Gynecologist who diagnosed me with PCOS ( I have all the symptoms : pear-shaped body, trouble to loose weight, hysrutism, irregular cycles, no ovulation ) and performed an ovaries drill last month. However, he has not tested me on an endo level. This means he has not tested me on testosterone levels or insuline resistance.
The MET seemed to work well on me as I had a first regular cycle and I am dropping the extra weight, the only problem is that I am afraid it may cause me other health problems because I have not been tested on my liver and kidneys functions and I am afraid of lactic acidosis. So, everythime I have a health issue, stomach cramps, feel weak or other symptoms, I panic and wonder if it is not related to lactic acidosis or because I am on the MET.
I have made an appointment with an Endo specialist who sees reproduction and fertility issues. I am planning to present my situation and ask her to make all the tests to see if I should continue with the MET.
The question I have is as follows : do you think it is better to see both a Gynecologist and Endo ? I really feel that all the problems I have been carrying for years ( which now I know are due to the PCOS ) may have a solution by regulating my hormones ( using MET ) but my Gynecologists does not seem to take into account the Endocrinology aspect...
I know these are two different fields and that not always the Gynecologists are also specialized in Endocrinology. I just do not want to leave something aside something which could actually be the key to regulate my cycles, loose the extra weight which has been complicated even with diets and exercise, and get pregnant soon !!
It depends on the doctors, honesty and their view of PCOS. My worst experiences were with 2 separate Endos...one of mine asked ME to explain to him the relationship between insulin and PCOS! I sat there thinking "YOU'RE the one who went to medical school, you idiot"!
My greatest advocate for PCOS, the guy who read the most and did his homework was my GP and one OB/GYN. So find Dr Right and it doesn't matter what his credentials are as long as he gives you the tools you need to treat PCOS thoroughly. I'd look more at a Dr's pholosophy on PCS more than what his specialty is.
My two cents.

What about a reproductive endocrinologies...best of both worlds?
Regarding your diagnosis, my hormones and blood sugar tested normal (though I didn't do the more detailed blood tests) and my doctor still prescribed Met for me based on an ultrasound that showed PCOS, irregular periods, increased hair, and acne.
I have an endo and ob/gyn my endo was there first tho cuz i just started TTC with help but yea dats how i found out bout my enlarged clitorius and how bad my pcos was. I'm unsure if u need both of them but i have both. one works fully on my pcos and the utha works on helping me conceive

My Reproductive endocrinologist is also a gynocologist. He specializes in fertility and the female reproductive problems caused by endocrine disorders. Best of both worlds. Awesome doctor and is treating my PCOS and will help us have a family, I just know it! Don't give up and keep looking for a doctor that gives you a proactive response. My GP was a frigging idiot.... so glad I finally put my foot down and demanded a referral to an RE and then once I got in was diagnosed and here I am.

I think Christy as always is right on the money. Don't go by credentials. You want to find a doctor that shares your views and goals. Their priorities should be to help you with the PCOS so that you ultimately can conceive. If for some reason you are not satisfied with your doctor start looking for another one. Ask around for people who can recommend someone who has already had experiences with a particular doctor. This can save you a lot of disappointment.

Thank you all for your comments and suggestions... they are really useful and supportive when going though this process : finding a solution for PCOS and get pregnant !!
I believe it is hard to find the right doctor, one who actually covers all the sides of PCOS and fertility. I have had already 2 dissapointments with doctors, both were looking after the money, not after me. The first one never did a complete exam to see if I was ovulating, and we paid for 2 unsuccesful inseminations. The second was one of the most reputed fertility centers in town ( and it is always packed with ladies with the same fertility problem looking for hope and getting pregnant ) but they wanted to proceed imediately with in vitro ( they charge good money for each try ) and even if these guys also had specialty in Reproductive Endocrinology, they never even tested me for testosterone, or even considered the endocrinology aspect concerning the PCOS.
The doctor I see now was chosen after many visits to various "fertility specialists" in town. We had to pay all these first visits but we found one who really seemed to be more professional and honest. I do not discard the idea of in vitro if there is nothing else to try, but I really would like to try first the natural way.
Maybe there are not a lot of options in my town ( I live in Mexico ) or maybe it was bad luck. However, the more you read and learn about PCOS, the better you understand your body and know how to make the right questions to the doctors.
From what I see, my Gynecologirst ( even if he is good and so far honest ) has not considered the endocrinology side, that is why I decided to find someone else specialized in reproductive endocrinology and combine the best of both. I just hope they will not argue about the treatments of the other party, as all doctors love to do it !!
I just hope there would be a way to help all the newbies in my country to have more information so they are not deceived by doctors who are getting rich by taking the long way to diagnose and cure the PCOS and help them get them pregnant... I may be considering on starting some sort of PCOS awareness campaign and free resources like this site, but available in spanish !!
Thanks for your help and support, it is very valuable for me !!
