I'm new to the board and newly diagnosed with mild PCOS. I'll try to keep this short. I just moved and saw a new OB-GYN in July. DH and I have been TTC since 1/04 (I'm 29, he's 30). After going through the standard medical history he decided to take some blood tests. Results came back and he said no thyroid problems, no diabetes and a mild case of PCOS. I may not be O and it's hard to figure out when I O since my cycles are irregular (between 26 to 38 days). He said I would be a good candidate for Clomid. He said we could either continue trying on our own (just started charting so that should be helpful) or start Clomid. What should I do?? Also, should I then see an RE? It seems my OB-BYN took some of the initial blood tests an RE would. Any advice would be helpful, sorry so long. Thanks!
I'm no expert, but here is my opinion. The fact that you started charting is great. I would give the charting a few months and see if timing BDing around your O (since you are possibly Oing and dont know it) would work w/o drugs. I know it probably seems like you've been trying for a while with no success, but in all honesty you have probably only had about 5-6 chances to get pregnant since you started TTCing since you say you have a long cycle.
Also I don't know if you are a canidate for something like metformin/gluchophage or avandia. That would be something an E or RE would probably be better able to tell. These are other drugs that have helped cysters O and/or get pg. As you can see from my signature I am on a lot of them. I applaud you taking charge of your health and if you have any other questions ask or search the boards. There are a lot of cysters with great info out there.
Thanks Aimee for the reply, I hear where you're coming from and we've more or less decided to try for a bit longer before considering any meds. I know it's only been 7 months but I've always had AF and never been on BCP so I figured I would be able to conceive easily - but I realize there's so much I don't know.
If you don't mind me asking, how long have you been seeing an E/RE? Great news on the HSG, have you been feeling okay with the Clomid?
Hi Kay!
Like I said it is only my opinion.... but then again wtf do I know anyhow????? I'm not nor have I ever gotten PG so why are you listening to me anyhow???? JK
You may very well be having a period every month but never ovulating. Hopefully the charting will help you figure that out. Your gyn should be able to do a test on like CD 21 or so to check your progesterone levels. That will tell if you Oed. My SIL's cousin had no health issues whatsoever but couldnt get pg, turns out she was anovulatory. I believe she did clomid and it worked for her. She has 2 kids now so something worked
I was really glad about the HSG coming back clear because the first one looked like a possible blockage on the right side. When we redid it the Dr couldnt see the fluid in the tube on the right..but the radiologist saw it. It was going way up.. looked like it was going somewhere it shouldnt.. but she assured me that it was ok.. that your tubes kinda move around.. i picture it like the robot on the old Lost in Space TV show. Danger.. Danger..
I've been seeing an E since April 02. I was put on Gluc XR slowly up to 2500. My testosterone levels are very high. They didn't go down so he upped it this Jan to 3000 which is rare to see. I never got af after I went off the pill.. even after the gluc. I finally got a period by using NPC. I am also on avandia. The clomid was given to me by my gyn. I'm really happy with her. She has always been supportive and is very weight friendly. My E and my GP always harp on me to lose weight, which I know will probably only help me but I can't seem to do it, even for the ultimate goal of having a child. If that isnt incentive I dont know what is! I don't seem to be having any effects from the clomid, but I'm a good drug taker I dont usually see a lot of side effects. I possibly have hot flashes but its hard to tell with the weather the way it is.
Wow.. I'm long winded. Sorry bout that. If you have any more questions I'll try to answer as best I can.... and more succiently next time
Good doctors are hard to find so I'm glad you've got some good ones. Good thing you're a good drug taker too!! Okay I've used good 5 times now .... see, more things I didn't know, your tubes move around?? More and more I'm thinking guys have it sooo easy!
Anyways, the more we're informed and taking charge of our health like you said, the better. We all want to get a handle on all this and possibly have children so I'm thinking positive thoughts for you! Thanks for all your info
I was recently diagnosed with PCOS. My Doctor started me on metformin, and told me to chart for three months and then return for a follow up appointment with my charts.
If I am not ovulating he said he will refer me to a RE and start injectables. If I am ovulating, he thinks clomid might give me a boast and hopefully I will get pregnant soon. I feel like dh and I have been trying to conceive forever, and I am ready to move treatment along quickly.

I've been reading up on Met and have a list of questions for my doc. Just started charting too and am hoping that that and OPK will give me a clue when/if I ovulate. I naively thought since I get AF I must be ovulating but I've learned that's not always the case. I started today , shockingly on CD29, so I'm thinking that's a good sign
What are your PCOS symptoms? I seem to have few, irregular periods and possibly anovulatory. I'm waiting to hear back from my doctor on the actual results of my tests rather than just telling me I have mild PCOS.
I haven't been on this journey long but it's still frustrating. Keep your chin up! I'm corny but it's true.
I have quite a few of the PCOS symptoms; Irregular cycles, Skin tags, Excess body hair, weight gain, and those awful dark patches.
As for blood test results, my worst one was the DHEA/testosterone levels being elevated. Hopefully the metformin will help with that. My insulin levels are normal which is odd to me, because I had been struggling to lose weight. The good news is that the metformin is helping to make it a lot easier for me to lose, along with eating healthy and exercise.
You are right, we must keep chin up
And I don't think that is corny at all.
I am waiting for af to make an official visit next week. This will be my first cycle on metformin and I am excited to see what improvements it brings. I am on cd-24, not to far behind you.
Have you already brought the OPK's?

I've got sooo much to learn. Things seem contradictory but this board has been an awesome resource.
I'm actually going to buy the OPK this weekend - my doc told me to get Clear Plan Easy or First Response ... was there any particular brand your doc recommended?
If there is any question you have, or if you don't understand something, please feel free to ask. I am not an expert, but I have been reading everything possible about PCOS, and maybe I can help you.
My doctor hasn't recommended OPK's yet, but from what I have read Clearplan Easy and OvuQuick are most recommended for us Cysters with PCOS.
How is your charting going?
