Default Should I start now or wait?

My doctor gave me a prescription for Metformin Extended Release yesterday. I went ahead and got it filled, but I am nervous about starting it.

I am only 2 weeks out from having major surgery and I am wondering if I should wait a month or so? I'm scared of lactic acidosis! Does anyone have any advice? Also, since I still feel like crap from the surgery, I'd like to feel a little better so that I can know if the Met makes me sick.

My Dr had me start a good diet and exercise plan a month before i started Met (i did SB). If you feel nervous about starting now, maybe you'd want to try that?

I would wait. I had major surgery for a completed hiatal hernia (we're talking 12 inch scar, reconstruction of my esophogus and 6 hours on the table) in April, and only started feeling "normal" about mid August.

Also, are you guarenteed to get the meds in hosp? If not, you'd go off it, then have to go on it again.

I already had the surgery 2 weeks ago. I'm hoping to not have to go back in the hospital! LOL

I'm supposed to be feeling better in 4 weeks or so, although the doctor said I will have a longer recovery than most.

I'm definitely leaning towards holding off on starting it, but I'd really like to get things going, too...

Talk to your Dr...if he gave you the script he likely knew about your surgery and I would get his thumbs up. Regarding LActic acidosis, if you click on the FAQ thread at the top of the met forum, the research i did showed that .003% of patients on Met got LA, so it's a pretty far fetched worry. if you read the thread there is some info on symptoms and risk assessment that will likely ease your mind.

Hope you are recovering well from your surgery. All the best!

i just started taking metformin. all of the information i found on the web, via google says you should wait until you are healed completely from operations before taking metformin. Additional notes said to stop taking metformin two days prior to having emergency operations.
