Yesterday I went to my ob/gyn & began taking steps towards starting Clomid. Here's some of what I found out from my ob/gyn & online research....First, my husband needs to take a sperm count test. I received the paperwork & facility locations from my ob/gyn for him to have this done. Once the test results are reviewed then we may proceed. Also, I have had a round of bloodwork done quite recently so that may be another item to have done & reviewed before proceeding. Another item that I had done was an ultrasound to make sure that my system (ovaries & tubes) looked alright to proceed.
From what I have learned online & from a close family member experiencing similar fertility issues as myself (PCOS diagnosis & currently taking Glucophage), Clomid is taken to stimulate the ovaries to produce an egg thus releasing the hormones necessary for ovulation. It is taken in 5 day cycles (on cycle days 3-7 or 5-9). Also, more than 1/2 will get pregnant during the first 3 cycles & is not recommended to continue taking past 5 or 6 cycles. Also, Clomid may increase the likelihood of multiple births. Due to that reason, most insurance companies will not cover Clomid. We have Blue Cross/Blue Shield PPO & it is not covered. However, I checked 3 different sources for cost analysis & found out the following:
Personally, my husband & I are committed to doing whatever it takes to have a baby. Glucophage was not entirely unsuccessful since it did finally allow me to begin to get my cycle again. My main issues are irregular periods & little/if no ovulation. So, from what my ob/gyn has told me, Clomid will aid in cycle regularity, easier ovulation detection & the potential ultimate...getting pregnant in a relatively quick timeframe. We are all for that so, I'd say talk with your ob/gyn or reproductive specialist & see if it's right for you. It's definitely been long enough for us & we are ready to go onto the next step.
Good luck & please let me know if/how I can further help you out.
Take Care.
Paige

thanks, Paige. You've answered any questions that I've had. I have already had the blood tests, ultra sound and sperm test completed. My HSG to test for tubal blockages is Oct 19, so after that, I'm set!!!

My cycles weren't as long as yours but clomid did help shorten them slightly. If clomid makes you ovulate earlier, which it should, and your luteal phase is normal, than you should have shorter cycles. I went from ovulating on day 17-19 to 13-14. HTH!

Just want to let you ladies know that my RE told me that you first take Clomid, then you give yourself an injection of Ovidrel to "release" the egg from the follicle, then you take Progesterone Suppositories to build the lining of the uterus. So you got to remember that you just don't pay for the Clomid. And my doctor also told me that eggstimulation varies between women. Nowadays it is rare on a smaller dosage for women to have multiple births. Of course you need to be monoitored by your RE while taking Clomid so if you are one of them who strongly agree with Clomid that you don't have sex as you may end up with multiples.
I am expecting my Clomid tomorrow and hopefully will get started on it by the end of the week. I have not ovulated since May 2006 so I can get started right away. I have done Met for 6 weeks and that did not work and my RE does not want me to wait any longer. I only started seeing him in the beginning of September and he is moving fast, which is a REALLY good thing. He said to do try naturally on Clomid for 2 months, then IUI for 2 months and then IVF. But I think we want to try naturally on Clomid for 4 months and then IUIs. My insurance company does not cover IUIs I think so that could become really expensive...

My dr. doesn't have me take all the other stuff. I just take clomid and met; so that's all I'm paying for at this point. If we move on to IUI's then he'll add the trigger shot but still no progesterone. I think advice varies from doc to doc.

I did clomid/ovridel cycles for a little over a year. It wasn't a big deal, really. I naturally only have about 2-3 cycles a year, so I had to do something else to ovulate. It was funny because I had crapms and I had never had them before It was kind of scary when my doc did ultrasounds and said things like "ok... there are 6 eggs over here, and 4 over here...) and I was AHHH 10 babies?! I;d reccommend it though. I never got pregnant, but a lot of women have on it. I think I'm just the exception. I'm going to go back as soon as my husband and I get more money saved. cuz, yeah, its expensive.
However, (this may be a conincidence or something, I don't know) since I had taken clomid, I cannot take ANY birthcontrol pills now or I get migranes--day 19--like clockwork. I don't know if its related to that or not, but that's what happened when I tried to go back on the pill. just thought I'd mention it.
I thought that I would post that there is only a 6.9% chance of twins with clomid and then for more then twins the percent goes down to less then half a %. I think that you are more likely to have twins with it if you are using a higher dose. The max recommended dose is 100mg but I know that DR will go as high as 200mg. My guess is that with 200mg you have a greater chance of twins. I dont want anyone to worry about having twins cause it is a small chance.
