I'm considering using PCOS as a project in my Biology class. My teacher said to do a paper, powerpoint, speech, basically whatever on a disease for our next coming project, and I'm feeling really compelled to do PCOS (I wanna get in on the whole awarness thing).
Now, I have some close friends in that class, that I've already told "I have PCOS", but I haven't really gotten into the specifics about it. My worry about using PCOS in a presentation is that it's a more personal disease than anything, so it might be awkward in sharing......I haven't been diagnosed for too long, so I think the PCOS concept is still a bit too near to me to be able to share that freely.
::weary sigh:: Maybe I should just do a paper. Trust me, I do want to share, but I wonder if it's the right choice for me at the moment. I don't want to pressure myself into doing it.
Opinions?

I know exactly how you feel!
I have a few friends in school that i told and found it easy to talk to them about it but... One day i was talking to my friend and a teacher overheard us and she was asking about it, i told her loads but when i was i thhought my heart would burst i was so nervous!
If i was that bad with one person i don't know what i'd be like in front of the whole class! especially with the fella's there too.
I think that if you want to do it you should write a paper and hand it out then run to the bathroom! (thats what i'd do anyway! lol!) by the time you get back everyone will have read it and know so then you can get on with the rest of the presentation, hopefully nerves wont be as bad then.
BUT if you don't feel comfortable talking about it yet don't push yourself. there are soooo many other diseases out there you can do a project on. Only do what you feel comfortable with.

I think you should do the paper because I know that there are probably alot of girls out there that have PCOS but dont even know it. I know it took me four years of pain for the doctors to finally diagnose me with it. I had to do most of the research myself. I guess depending on the grade that you are in the boys shouldn't feel uncomfortable about it. I would probably discuss it with mt teacher and ask her if she thinks it is appropriate. Good Luck!!
i think if you stress how common it is, and that its a genetic condition, that may make the paper easier to read if you have to read it. and i agree you'll probably be doing many of the girls favors by shareing.
I actually did do a speech on PCOS for my oral com. class. I raised $20 for the PCOSA too!!!. I said in my speech that I had it and people were not weirded out they were happy and supportive and wanted to help and donate because of it. A girl in my class also went to the doctor after it because she noticed she had most of the symptoms and she was diagnosed and now getting help. Remember that it starts alot in your teens it just goes unnoticed and undetected because we are young but you could also help people by doing it. And if you bring up the awareness campaign more could also come of it. I think you should definatly do the paper just be cool! no one's going to think negative or nothin!!!
good luck

i wouldnt do it. im in grade 12, i know how catty some girls are. i guess i sound like the pessimist but its true. is there anyone in that class that is the type of girl that would want to put you down? you gotta think hard about who you tell because in an environment like a school it is really hard, with all the people who are insecure and like to take it out on others.
some aspects of it i'd love to share, and tell people about it so they can atleast better understant. but when it comes to the hair situation i couldnt say anythin about that! everything eles i;d be happy to get up there a talk about it
