I'm 19. Four months ago, I found out i have PCOS. Ever since then my doctor has put me on birth control the Yasmin - 21. I've been taking it regularly and never missed a pill. The first month of taking it I got my period about 3-4 days into the week when I was supposed to take a break from taking the pills. This month I've been taking the pills regularly as usual and only had sex once and took the pill right after because I wasn't able to take it at the same time that day. It's the week when I'm supposed to have my period and i'm on the 8th day already and still no bleeding..
I've had the usual cramps, like my period was coming. Along with really bad headaches that's never happened to me before. But I've heard it happens when the level of hormones is changing which is supposed to happen in the one week that I'm off the pill.
I'm supposed to start my new pack of pills today, so I'm going to go a head with that. But should I be worried that I didn't get a period this time? Is ths normal? I've only been on it for 3 months and I've heard it takes a while to get a regular period. I could just be stressing out too much about it, it's been a frustrating week with school and everything.
Should I take a test?
Ok, relax. If there's a chance of pregnancy, take a test of course! At least to help you understand! Next thing, if you're not pregnant, it is important to know that Yasmin contains a very strong progestogen, which can take some getting used to. For example, when I was on another pill, my period would come in 2 days, literally 48 hours! On Yasmin, the bleed happens sometimes 3 whole days after the last pill. Sometimes you may not bleed at all, whether you are new to the pill or not. So, I would suggest that if this continues to happen after a couple more months, you should ask for a pill change to one that has a slightly less potent progestogen, e.g. Desogestrel.
The headaches during the break week are just due to the oestrogen levels changing, and unless they developed into migraines with auras, you needn't worry.
Try drinking herbal teas such as fennel tea, and avoid caffeine.
Definitely take a pregnancy test. It's a small price to pay for a quick answer. If you're not pregnant, you can rest easy and call your doctor. You may still be getting used to it. If you are pregnant, well, then you'll know how to deal with it.
I'm guessing that you're afraid of taking the test, because it sounds like you realize pregnancy is a possibility. It is scary - I've taken a few of them myself and I have no desire for a baby, so it's a stressful and heart-pounding experience every time. But at least afterward, you'll know, either way.
