Default Should my doctor have tested my insulin levels?

Hello all! I suspected PCOS for awhile now and made an appt with my ob/gyn. She did some tests and and U/S. These all came back normal, but based on my outwardly symptoms, she decided she was unsure and sent me to an endocrynologist. He said my labs were normal, but on the high side of normal and along with my symptoms, concluded that I do in fact have PCOS. He then sent me to have a 2 hour glucose tolerance test, which came back normal. At that point, he put me on Metformin 1000mg daily (i've been on it for a week now). What I'm concerned about, is that he never tested my insulin levels. I thought insulin had a lot to with this, and I show symptoms of IR so why was this the only test left out. Also, from what I've been reading, for Metformin to effectively treat PCOS, your dose should start at 1500mg daily. Anyway, I get married in a few months and want to get this straightend out because we want children (btw, I've been off bc for 8 months and still no bfp). So, if you were in my shoes, would you make an appointment with an REPRODUCTIVE endocrynologist? I just want someone who knows what they're talking about. So...should my insulin have been tested and is my Metformin dose high enough?? Sorry so long....TIA!

Get copies of your labwork. It's just helpful in the long run to have them in your possession.

If your glucose level was on the high end of normal, maybe s/he decided just to forgo that insulin test. I think there are quite a few studies on here regarding prescribing Met without having tested specifically for a fasting insulin level.

I think this is the "optimal" level...starting you out on that dose would probably cause EXTREME side-effects. I hear a lot about beginning at 500mg and adding more weekly; just so the process is gradual.

If fertility is your largest concern, I'd definitely go for an RE.
