    Default Antibiotics and metformin

I happened to step on smething and my doctor prescribed me Amoxicillin 850 mg twice a day for the infection in my foot. He said it won't affect the metformin. Does anyone know about this? Is it really ok to take both? I am new at this!

    Hello kittycat,

yes you can take antiboitics with metformin, I have type 2 diabetes along with pcos and have been taking metformin for awhile, having diabetes you tend to have infections quite often and I always take amoxicillin for infections and never had any bad reactions. Hope this helps

I've been taking Glucophage for almost a month now. (1500 mg for the past 2 wks) I just finished taking 14 days of 875 mg of Augmentin for an infected hand from a cat bite 2 wks ago. My only problem was diarrhea. I just made certain I ate live cultured yogurt while on the antibiotic.

    You should be fine.

    I love this site!

I wanted to know this too as I suffer from boils and abcesses often but I wasn't sure whether to go to the doctor as I thought that I would be unable to get an anti-biotic for them like I normally do.

I have another question, what painkillers can you take? is Paracetamol okay? Aspirin? Co-codamol? ibuprofen? I am on a period right now and have bad cramps but am not sure what I can use - any advice?
Age 31 - textbook case, no meds right now but have tried Diannette (for 8 years -great but weight and blood pressure went up) and Metformin (didn't agree with me). hoping to start Clomid within the next few months. No period since September '02 - Hormones and moods are going haywire!

DO NOT take RX'd pain meds at the same time you take anything else! It can react to your Gluc/met as well! making the effects stronger!

This is when I discovered a halusenaiting trip!
I took darviset, which when given the DR said "NON NARCOTIC"(Or so I thought I heard)
Turns out they are(only cause neighbor does lab billing and wher they read the charts and stuff,so she looked it up for me-I couldn't find it by the generic name) and if you take it with in 1-2 hrs of Gluc/Met you could have anxiety.sleeplessness and really bad dreams when you do get to sleep.

So antibiotics are fine to take with the Gluc,I would still take them at least an hour apart to save your tummy.
But don't take RX's pain meds with in 2 hrs of anything.

Stick with IBuprofen and tylanol when ever possible.
You can even have those two together in the same day if needed.
Take the IB every 6 hrs and Tylanol every 4 hrs.

    Good luck,

heehee Patty - you really are a mine of useful information! I have to say that this would explain something to me - I had taken some Paracetamol last week - 2 nights in a row - for headache and funnily enough my bf told me that I had been talking in my sleep those nights, hmmmmmmmm.
