Maximum dose for Metformin?
Does anyone know what the maximum safe dose of Metformin is? My GP mentioned 3000mg which I thought was a bit high, I have read that it is not effective for PCOS until 1750mg and know of quite a few people who take 2000mg (I've upped myself to that level this week with no side effects).
Do the risks of LA (or any other nasty side effect) increase with larger doses? Frequent bowel movements won't worry me at the moment, even at 2000mg, Met makes me constipated

I have always been told 2500 is the max

I'm on 2250mg and I've also been told 2500mg is the maximum because anything higher will cause too many stomach problems.

Thats what I thought as well, although I do naturally mistrust most things Doctors tell me about PCOS, I did think 3000 was a bit high.
I think I will discuss increasing my dose even higher though (I have been taking 2000mg this week, up from 1500mg from my last GP visit...I know I shouldn't have upped the dose myself but I *really* need to get past this constipation...so much so that I am willing to give 2500mg a shot if the Endo is agreeable or dosn't have a better solution.

I thought I would come back and say (in my GP's defence) that I read the leaflet in my box of Glucohexal (Met) and it does in fact say that the maximum dose is usually 3000mg, unless advised otherwise by your Dr.
Which just makes me wonder if that dosage is for this brand of generic Met and if the same is true of Glucophage (I've been doing a bit of research this afternoon and I am beginning to think that taking the generic form of Met might be the reason why it is not working for me).
